The Basis Peak is one of the most powerful (and accurate) activity trackers on the market. But it’s not necessarily the best looking.
Now Intel (which acquired Basis last year) has launched a new version with a sleek design. The Basis Peak Titanium Edition has all the same fitness tracking features as its predecessor, but it costs $100 more. Oh yeah, it also has a titanium case and a leather band.
The new Basis Peak Titanium Edition is available for $300, and you can choose from a range of straps for $50 each. You can also pick up an original, plastic Basis Peak for $200 at the Basis store.
Basis is also rolling out a major software update for both models. Among other things, it adds support for Apple Health and Google Fit which lets you gather activity data using the device strapped to your wrist and view it on your iPhone or Android phone or share the data with other apps.
The software update also adds stopwatch functionality to the Peak itself, as well as improved heart rate monitoring.
Once you’ve got the latest software, you can also join the Basis Peak Playground if you want to test upcoming features such as location tracking and “photo finish” which lets you snap a selfie after your run or workout and choose a mood. The idea is that you can see over time whether running actually makes you feel better or not… or something like that.
I haven’t worn a watch since I got my first cellphone. They are so 20th century.
One thing to note – from all I can glean from the Basis website, Android 5.x, Lollipop, is still not officially supported.
