The Asus Zenfone 2 is a line of smartphones with reasonably strong features and reasonably low price tags. Asus introduced its new Intel-powered phones at the Consumer Electronics Show in January, launched the product line in Taiwan earlier this month, and now it’s Europe’s turn.

The Zenfone 2 line of phones are now available for €179 and up.

Want to know when you’ll be able to get your hands on one in the United States? Well, Asus is holding a Zenfone 2 event in New York City on April 28th, if that gives you any ideas.

Update: The Zenfone 2 is now available in the US for $199 and up.

So what makes the Zenfone 2 special? That kind of depends on the model.

The entry-level Zenfone 2 ZE500CL features an Intel Atom Z2560 Clover Trail+ processor, a 5 inch, 1280 x 720 pixel display, 2GB of RAM, and 8GB of storage. Those specs aren’t awful for an entry-level phone, but they’re not exactly mindblowing.

The high-end Zenfone 2 ZE551ML, on the other hand, sports a 5.5 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixel display, an Intel Atom Z3580 Moorefield 64-bit processor, 4GB of RAM, and 32GB of storage. Nice specs… and an affordable price. In Europe the phone will sell for €349, although it’ll be on sale for €299 for a limited time.

Want something in between? There’s the Zenfone 2 ZE550ML which packs a 5,5 inch, 720p display, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, and an Intel Atom Z3560 Moorefield processor for €249.

US prices are expected to start at $199 when the Zenfone 2 family goes on sale in the United States.

  1. Phones with a very good price / quality ratio, we see every day, and even though Asus does not necessarily sound like a brand of smartphones, as this is a brand that is associated with laptops or LCD screens including, Asus smartphone attract easily.

  2. Would any one the configurations be able to handle any and all US carrier like the Nexus 6?

    1. The Taiwan models will work on Tmob and ATT, as it is a GSM phone, it doesn’t work with CDMA carriers like Sprint or Verizon. If you don’t mind paying a reseller fee, there is no reason to wait.

  3. Are they forgetting, or omitting the 2gb ram version of the ZE551ML? That’s the one i want to buy.

  4. These phones look good on paper, but can anyone comment on the app and game selection for x86-based Android devices? It would suck to have spent a bunch on, say, Humble Android Bundles only to be unable to get any use out of them.

    1. You shouldn’t have to worry anymore, Google officially supports both ARM and Intel platforms for Android, the developer tools allow both to be easily supported and the app installers will usually be smart enough to install the right version of the app for your device… Just like the store will usually not show any app not compatible with your device…

So it’s mainly a question of performance these days, unless you use a really old app, Intel is behind on graphical performance but their CPU performance is still good enough for most… While they’re working on improving their graphical performance if you rather wait… but keep in mind Intel SoCs are not entirely x86 for the phone range… Intel’s upcoming SoFIA (x3) SoCs are basically based on ARM and just use Intel x86 CPU cores… It’s even made on the 28nm FAB…

Only Intel’s tablet, on up, SoCs are fully based on their own technology but unless you want to run the desktop, etc. then you don’t have to worry about those… While their phone SoCs use either Imagination PowerVR GPU’s or Mali GPU’s…

Intel also makes use of things like binary translation layers to help run even code that isn’t optimized for x86… Runs slower but usually still runs, much like running a emulator…

Though, it’s not everything is fully compatible between ARM devices either… like those games optimized for Nvidia Tegra models aren’t usually available for other ARM devices as well, for example but besides such limitations you can usually run just about anything otherwise…

Btw, some video reviews already exist for the Zenfone 2… You can see games like Asphalt 8, NOVA 3, and Dead Trigger 2 being played on it…

  5. Hmm funky, is this the first of the 4GB RAM phones? Any other details like cameras, 4G etc? Also, where is it available from? It’s not on amazon.fr :/

    1. Why not Google it? Or click on the links provided to find out more info?

  6. The entry level Zenfone 2 looks like the Zenfone 1
model, which was panned due to poor battery life.
Wonder if the 2 is any better.
