The Asus X401 is a budget portable laptop with a 14 inch display. Measuring 1.3 inches thick, it’s certainly no ultrabook, but with a starting price of $350 it’s less than half the price of a typical ultrabook. And since it weighs just 4 pounds, it’s actually lighter than some laptops wearing the ultrabook label.

That probably says more about the laptops that Intel calls ultrabooks than it does about the Asus X401, but if you’re looking for a laptop with a netbook-like price tag but a larger screen and keyboard and a faster processor, the X401 looks like an interesting choice.

Asus X401

First unveiled last month, the Asus X401 is now available from Best Buy, where its being positioned as a “Starter” PC.

The laptop has a 2.3 GHz Intel Pentium processor, 4GB of DDR3 memory, and a 320GB hard drive. It features 1 USB 3.0 port and 1 USB 2.0 port, a webcam, Ethernet port, and 802.11n WiFi. The X401 ships with Windows 7 Home Premium.

Don’t expect any other premium features like Bluetooth or a 1080p screen: the X401 has a 1366 x 768 pixel display. The single USB 3.0 port is a pleasant surprise though.

The Asus X401 measures 13.5″ x 9.5″ x 1.3″ and weighs 4.1 pounds. It’s available in blue, pink, or green.

Asus is also expected to launch low-cost X301 and X501 laptops with 13.3 and 15.6 inch displays this year.

    1. All the new Pentium and Celeron models are based on Sandy Bridge with HD GMA that’s based on the HD 2000.

At 2.3GHz that should be the Pentium B950, GMA clocked at 650 / 1100 (with Turbo Boost), which is a dual core processor for entry-level laptops.

Mind that though based on the Sandy Bridge architecture many of the features like Turbo Boost for the CPU part, HyperThreading, AES, Virtualization (VT-x and VT-d), Trusted Execution or Intel Quick Sync are deactivated.
