Asus CEO Jonney Shih says the company plans to phase out its 7 inch netbooks, but is not ready to eliminate its 8.9 inch models just yet despite recent reports suggesting that the company would be focusing almost exclusively on models with 10 inch screens.

Speaking at CeBIT in Germany, Shih said that customers seem to prefer computers with larger screens and keyboards than those found on 7 inchnetbooks. But he says the 8.9 inch machines could still be attractive children, emerging markets, and telecommunications providers. To me, that sounds like he’s admitting that you won’t see the 8.9 inch models available through general retail outlets much longer, but I could be wrong. On the other hand, we have seen plenty of stores offering deep, deep discounts on 8.9 inch Asus netbooks like the Eee PC 901 recently.

  1. I have the 7inch and I love it, still using it till this day! I wish they were still making these….sad to see them go. I am hitting up ebay in hopes to find another one.

  2. The problem with the 7 inch netbooks is that because of the speakers they are almost as big as 9 inch netbooks, which removes the big incentive of having a 7 inch screen. If Asus released a real 7 inch netbook weighting less than 2 pounds with no moving parts and decent battery life it would probably be a success.

  3. I just bought a 900HA myself last week even though I could have gone for a 1000HE. My problem was if I am going to step up to a 10 inch one, why stop there? Why not go on to a full 13 incher with a core 2 for only a few hunderd more. Then it just spirals down from there; if I’m getting this, well then why not…

8.9 books are perfect imo. They have the right size for me, usability battery life etc. I truly hope Asus doesn’t kill 8.9’s. I’m loving mine so far!

  4. I really like the size of the 8.9″ Asus netbooks. I can’t say I care for the keboard layout. If they would fix that, I’d get one in a heartbeat.

  5. he said that they will continue to sell 8.9 inchers as many users find them better for mobile use…

    7 inchers for emerging markets…
