Asus has started offering a new version of its Zenbook UX51 15.6 inch ultrabook, featuring a high-resolution 2880 x 1620 pixel display.

The company’s been offering 1920 x 1080 pixel screens for a while, but this is the first Asus laptop to ship with a higher-than 1080p screen. Unfortunately it only appears to be available in Germany at the moment.

Asus Zenbook UX51VZ-DB114H

The Asus Zenbook UX51VZ-DB114H has more going for it than the display. It also features a 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7-3632QM quad-core processor and NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M graphics.

The laptop has 8GB of RAM, up to 512GB of solid state storage and a 90Whr battery.

While ultrabooks with 15.6 inch screens aren’t quite as portable as the more common 13 inch models, the Zenbook UX51Z is reasonably thin and light for its size. It measures less than 0.8 inches thick and and weighs about 4.5 pounds.

A growing number of laptops are available with high-resolution displays, including the Toshiba Kirabook, Apple Macbook Pro, and Google Chromebook Pixel. Unfortunately those screens tend to drive up the price.

The Zenbook UX51VZ-DB114H has a starting price of around 1699 Euros ($2200 US) for a model with a 256GB solid state disk. A model with 512GB of storage runs 1999 Euros (about $2600).

  1. overpriced for a windows laptop. This laptop doesn’t look as luxury as Macbook pro retina but still cost nearly the same. If you are talking about laptop screens, I haven’t seen Asus producing any extremely good laptop screen (i’m just comparing all the asus laptops that I know with my Dell studio XPS 16 which is around 2-3 years old). Hopefully this is going to be their first time BUT the laptop screen from the picture doesn’t look nice to me. My personal opinion is based on my personal experience so don’t judge me too hard on this.

  2. spec and price very similar to macbook pro retina…

retina has still nicer screen (16×10 – golden ratio; also better image quality than previously used IPS in full hd asus ux51), thunderbolt (if someone needs it), safe power connector (good idea!), a bit better CPU (comparing $2200 versions; however bigger TDP; negligible), a bit lighter (negligible), slightly better battery life (depends on usage; based on results of previous ux51 (fullhd) version)

asus has numerical keyboard, physical ethernet connector (without converters), hopefully non-glossy screen

    1. Don’t forget the ux51 has 2gb of dedicated gpu ram, one strip of ram is upgradeable. and here in Europe a comparable mbpr is still 300€ more expensive.

      1. for E400-500 u can think about a cheap ticket to US 😛

Also can you look for a macbook from other places than apple (eg. auction portal)

  3. I would have bought this one. Too bad it has asymmetric touchpad and keyboards because they wanted to fit in a useless number pad. And it’s really wide: almost 40 cm!
