About this time last year, Asus was best known for making motherboards. Now the company is probably best known for the Eee PC. Not only has Asus sold a whole bunch of the tiny computers, but the company has also gotten a lot of attention for its innovation in the low-cost ultraportable space.

Now, DigiTimes is reporting that Asus sold more computers in the first quarter of 2008 than Apple of Fujitsu. All told, Asus shipped about 2.1 million computers, 700,000 of which were Eee PC models. The 5th largest computer maker in the world, Lenovo, sold betwen 2.2 and 2.3 million units, which puts Asus within striking distance.
