Asus is working on a line of tablet computers running Windows 7 and Google Android. They’ll be called Eee pads. Asus also has a different device in the works called the Eee Tablet. Confused yet? You’re probably not alone, which is likely why Asus is reportedly going to rename the Eee Tablet before bringing it to market.

The soon-to-be-renamed Eee Tablet is part eBook Reader, part note-taking device. It will have an 8 inch 1024 x 768 pixel grayscale touchscreen display, a super-fast 0.1 second page turn speed, and recognize stylus input .

Asus first demoed the Eee Tablet this summer, but unfortunately for Asus, the world appears to have decided that the word tablet refers to devices like the Apple iPad, and Samsung Galaxy Tab which have full color displays, WiFi and sometimes 3G connectivity, and the ability to run third party apps. (This, despite the fact that companies have been cranking out “tablet” computers for the better part of ten years which have active digitizers for pressure-sensitive pen input as well as screen swivels and full keyboards so you can use the machines in laptop or tablet mode… then again, tablets used to be made of stone, so I guess things change).

Anyway, Engadget reports that Asus is kicking around new names such as Eee Note or Digital Note, and that the company will likely show off the tablet at CES and launched it early next year. No word on pricing, but we’ve heard that it could run $300, or just “under $599.” Of course, we hear a lot of things around here…

  1. Yes, you certainly wouldn’t want to confuse the marginally-cephalized amongst us by giving the name “tablet” to a device with tablet functionality. More so than emphasize making sense, we must take care of the morons lest they asphyxiate themselves on reality.

Yes, tablets used to be made of stone, with the obvious difference being that you wrote on tablets. I don’t know what differentiating terminology was given to rocks that people poked and stared at listlessly. Once we recover that term, we’ll use it for these “tablets”. In the meantime, it’s more than appropriate to refer to devices by their form factor (i.e. slate), usage scenario (media consumption, connected client, tablet input), or even their primary features (touch screen, keyboard).

    1. Why is a slate different from a tablet? Last I checked people used that word
to describe classroom blackboards which you write on.
