asus t91mt amz

Asus is starting to roll out an updated version of the Eee PC T91 touchscreen convertible netbook. Like the unit I reviewed a few months ago, the new model is powered by a 1.33GHz Intel Atom Z520 processor and includes an 8.9 inch touchscreen display that can be folded down over the keyboard for use in tablet mode. But there are three things that set the new Eee PC T91MT apart from the earlier model:

  1. It runs Windows 7 Home Premium
  2. The touchscreen supports multitouch gestures
  3. The solid state disk has been upgraded from 16GB to 32GB

As with a number of other new Asus laptops, the company is offering Eee PC T91MT customers 500GB of free online storge.

You can pre-order the Eee PC T91MT from Amazon for $549. The laptop has a non-removable battery which Asus says is good for up to 5 hours, 802.11b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth, and supports up to 2GB of RAM, (although it ships with just 1GB).

thanks Urban Strata!

  3. Hey nice blog…I really liked the way you articulated it. Recently, I heard Acer is going to launch Acer 5738 PzG – a Multi-touch laptop in India. They have redefined the touch experience and all the controls are at the helm of your fingertips. With a 15.6″ HD display with integrated multi-touch screen supporting finger touch and Cinematic 16:9 wide screen with 3rd Generation Dolby® audio it’s surely going to revolutionize the whole experience and all with affordable price of 45K INR. With it’s passion for simplifying user experience Acer has gained new heights in innovation.

    1. Ha! Nice press release, but a 15″ anything is not likely to get much attention on a website dedicated to ultra-portable machines.

  4. The 1GB RAM restriction was one of Microsoft’s arbitrary “cheap XP license” requirements. This machine ships with Windows 7 Home Premium, so it could easily come standard with 2GB… and should!

Sadly, the chipsets Intel currently makes available for most netbooks and other Liliputers have a 2GB upper limit on RAM.

But my post was mainly about what I’d like to see in the future anyway. This entire market segment is still developing!

  5. Agreed. I’ve been keeping an eye on the T91 for months now, only to be disappointed in the end. The pokey 1.33 GHz Atom CPU and tiny SSD (even at 32GB) just aren’t enough to tempt me.

I picked up the Fujitsu U810 on Woot the other day, and I’m in HEAVEN. At only 1.5lbs with a four cell battery and a convertible tablet screen, it does everything I’ve been trying to get various netbooks to accomplish for the past year and a half! And it managed to do so for about $400.

In order to pry this precious device from my fingers, you’d have to offer me the following:

    1. A slightly larger screen (7″ would be perfect) with at least the same resolution (1024 x 600). I’d want it to be capacitive, with an active digitizer for pressure-sensitive pen input.

    2. CPU and GPU that are both more powerful than any of the current netbook fare. Probably hold out for the next-gen Atom stuff.

    3. Nice, big, fast SSD. I’m already feeling somewhat cramped on this 60GB hard drive, and the speed isn’t fantastic. I want at least a 128GB SSD before I’d be tempted to upgrade.

Give me all of that, without losing the benefits of this one. Namely, a decent battery and a weight of LESS than 2lbs. Needless to say, I think it’ll be about a year before the ideal replacement for this Fujitsu hits the market at any kind of price I’d be willing to pay. This is so very near perfect, I’m in love! Sorry, Asus. [=^D

    1. One more thing: at least two gigs of RAM, with the ability to upgrade to at least four. Come on, people. RAM is cheap as dirt these days, and a modern operating system needs lot of it!

      1. Well this would be considered as a netbook which means it will be only shipped with 1GB of RAM.

The model looks good, but let us wait and see how customers like the model…..

Expensive to be considered a netbook though!

    2. When I compare the two, Fujitsu U810 has:
      – slower cpu
      – older and slower os
      – slower, non-ssd harddisk with slightly larger capacity
      – much smaller display
      – no multitouch
      – smaller width, but bigger height
      – 100% larger price

t91mt is not perfect, but for me it surpasses u810 is practically ever aspect

      1. Well, for my purposes, 800MHz Pentium M class CPU is in no way slower than a 1.33GHz Atom. The OS I replaced with Windows 7 immediately, so that was a non-issue as well. (Though granted, I am a software trainer and have access to Microsoft products at a very reduced rate.)

For me, the size of the HDD is more important than silence, and Asus has a reputation for putting quite slow SSD’s in their systems, so I’d say the jury is still out on any speed comparison! They are both easy enough to upgrade, though.

The size and weight of the U810 is about 2/3 of the T91MT. To carry with me everywhere, I really prefer something that is less than 2lbs. And as for price, I paid only $400 for the U810. I would NOT have paid full price, so your point stands on that!

Now, Multitouch is certainly something I wish I had on the U810, especially since I am running Windows 7! Though for me, accurate pen input is more critical.

But this all comes down to personal preference. The T91MT is a fantastic little machine. It’s not quite as suited to my needs as the U810 is, but I think it does represent significant progress in a market segment that is still developing. I can’t wait to see what the future holds! [=^D

      2. I realize this is a very old comment at this point, but I just thought I’d let you know that you were right. I sold my U810 and just picked up a T91MT. The U810 had an overheating problem, and the screen was just too small to do anything productive with.

The Asus T91MT is fanless and absolutely silent. It never gets warmer than my phone does after a long call. I managed to work around the small SSD by supplementing it with an SD card, and it’s working well for me so far!

The T91MT is definitely larger and heavier than the U810, but it’s still small and light enough to hold it in my hands comfortably while I ride the train to work. =)

        1. glad you realised your mistake. i mean the u810 is not even in the class of the t91mt. and lets not even get into the aesthetics of the u810

  6. It costs too much and it is too heavy for such a small device! I mean come on a 8.9″ for OVER $500 is ridiculous. But a 2.14 lb device with just a 3-cell battery (28.5WH battery is a 3-CELL) is a FAT PIG with no reason for being that heavy.
