Asus Eee PC 1215P with Ubuntu
Monclick

Last month computer maker Asus promised to begin offering netbooks and notebooks with Ubuntu Linux instead of Microsoft Windows. Now it looks like the company is beginning to follow through on that promise. Eee PC.it spotted a listing for an Eee PC laptop running Ubuntu at an Italian retail site.

The notebook is an Asus Eee PC 1215P. It features a 12.1 inch display, an Intel Atom N570 dual core processor, 2GB of memory, and a 320GB hard drive.

The listing describes the processor as a 1.5 GHz chip, but the Atom N570 is actually a 1.66 GHz chip, so I’d take some of the specs with a grain of salt. But the web site clearly describes the computer as an Ubuntu Linux machine.

The Eee PC 1215P is selling for just under 280 Euros, or about $397 US — but computers tend to carry higher price tags in Europe than they do in the States.

Update: I reached out to Asus for comment. It turns out there are currently no plans to offer any Eee PC models with Ubuntu Linux in the US, although that could change in the future.

In the meantime anyone looking for a Linux-based netbook from Asus has the Eee PC X101 to look forward to. Asus expects to launch that netbook in the US this summer with MeeGo Linux. It will sell for about $200.
