1005ha unboxed

The FedEx fairy just dropped off a present for me in the form of an Asus Eee PC 1005HA. This netbook will be available in the US soon, but Asus was kind enough to loan me a review unit for a few days.

The Eee PC 1005HA looks almost exactly like the Eee PC 1008HA. It has the same basic shape, the same super-glossy screen and case, and generally has the same specs with a 1.66GHz Intel Atom N280 CPU, 160GB hard drive, and 1GB of RAM.

What sets the 1005HA apart from the 1008HA is that the newer model is a bit thicker and heavier — but it also has a full sized VGA port and a removable battery which Asus claims is good for up to 10.5 hours. I’ll make sure to put that claim to the test soon.

In the meantime, you can check out my first impressions and a brief comparison with an Eee PC 1000H in the video below. Unfortunately I just sent back the Eee PC 1008HA I reviewed recently, so I didn’t have the chance to film a head to head comparison.

  1. I’m having trouble keeping up with all the new releases from Asus. How is this one materially different from the Eee PC 1000HE? That’s the one I’ve had my eye on, but it sounds like this one (the 1008 HA) has a longer battery life and, perhaps, a slightly faster processor. Anything else?

  2. Talked to an Asus representative just a few minutes ago. Got the word this was going to be released late August or early September. Can anybody tell me they’ve heard any differently as in earlier or later, or has anyone heard the same that I just did?

  3. All these glossy netbooks are making me sad. Has any manufacturer stated why everything seems to be glossy these days?
