Asus Eee PC 1000H vs Asus Eee PC S101

The Asus Eee PC S101 and Eee PC 1000H look a lot alike on paper. They have the same 1.6GHz Intel Atom CPU, 10.2 inch display, keyboard, touchpad, and a slew of other features in common. Yet the S101 costs about $200 more. What do you get for the money? A thinner, lighter laptop that has a solid state disk instead of a hard drive. Is it worth the extra money?

The folks at Portabel Monkey set out to find out, and have posted the most comprehensive comparison of these two machines I’ve seen to date. If you’re having a hard time choosing between these two netbooks, or if you just want to find out more about each, you should really check out the whole article. But here are a few of the highlights:

  • As expected, the S101 is much thinner and lighter than the Eee PC 1000H.
  • The SSD used in the Eee PC S101 is faster than the solid state disks you’ll find in cheaper netbooks like the Eee PC 901. It also supports faster read speeds than the hard disk in the Eee PC 1000H, although not faster write speeds. But that’s good enough to ensure that the premium netbook boots faster, shuts down faster, and may perform some other tasks faster.
  • The S101 has a fan, but no hard drive, which makes it quieter than the 1000H.

You certainly get what you pay for if you decide to spring the extra money for an Eee PC S101. But the additional features you get aren’t necessarily features that everyone will need. If you want a thin, light netbook that provides decent perfomance, the Eee PC 1000H will do. If you want a thinner, lighter netbook that provides similar performance, and you can afford to spend a little more money, the Eee PC S101 may meet your needs.
