Think the Asus 1015E Windows 8 mini-laptop which sells for around $249 to $299 is cheap? It looks like Asus plans to go even lower. A couple of online stores are now showing listings for a model with Ubuntu Linux which could sell for as little as $215.

The Asus 1015E-DS03 is a small laptop with a 10.1 inch, 1366 x 768 pixel display, a 1.1 GHz Intel Celeron dual-core processor, 2GB of RAM, and a 320GB hard drive.
Like the Windows 8 version, this little computer supports and Bluetooth, has 2 USB 2.0 ports and 1 USB 3.0 port, HDMI and Ethernet jacks, stereo speakers, and a headset jack. It also comes with a 6 cell battery.
The only differences I can spot are that the 1015E-DS03 comes with Ubuntu instead of Windows, and therefore has a lower price tag.
I’ve been running the Asus 1015E-ds03 Ubuntu variant for a bit under two months. I can verify the ram unfortunately not slot upgradeable as my 1025C was. Photos of mobo here:

I replaced the 320Gb Ubuntu 12.04 stock install with Crunchbang 11 64bit on a 256GB SSD, SanDisk Ultra.

It’s out! But the prices are hovering around $249, not the $215 Brad saw. Still a good deal, I think.

Suffice it to say, the Celeron 847 edges out even the E-450… So would be quite noticeably better than the lower end C-50…

Celeron 1005M (35W) and 1017U (17W), along with Pentium 2127U (17W) are the updated low voltage models…
For now only the higher end versions are available…
Thanks for the info. I wonder if it’ll also be a year and half for them to make it into 10.1″ and smaller screened notebooks or at all. In the meantime I’ll get this. Tried the whole touch screen thing with Android and Clover Trail Windows 8 tablets and found it not as useful as a keyboard and mouse pointer (even on Android). Of course, Android was just not that useful all together.
I guess my concern is how much battery life am I losing for the extra performance going from Clover Trail to this.
The battery life difference is large but it’s better to consider what’s good enough for you rather than a direct comparison as the trade off for better performance tends to make it worth it…
Fortunately, this Asus model usually comes with the 6 Cell battery and that’s suppose to provide up to 7.5 hours of usage… Though you may see closer to 6 hours with average usage as it’s usually pretty hard to match the suggest run time with real world usage…
There is a variant of the Acer TravelMate B113 with the 1007U, an Ivy Bridge derived Celeron. It has been available for several weeks and is well reviewed by its purchasers. It’s about $80 more than the Windows variant of this Asus netbook, and although it comes with an 11.6 inch screen, it also has twice the warranty coverage.
Hmm, you’re right but this appears to be a limited release… Models also cover the TravelMate and Aspire V5 series…
And Dell seems to have one 15.6 Inspiron model as well…
It appears to be limited because there’s virtually no information from those companies but they appear to be on multiple reseller sites… and from certain regions in some cases…
So probably they’re still waiting on larger production before really pushing those models… along with the other ULV Celeron and Pentium offerings to come out…

Yes, the C7 is a larger 11.6″ system, but also the C7 is under clocked to 800MHz and the $200 price is for the 3 Cell battery… The higher priced version is for the 6-cell battery…
While this Asus model is smaller at 10.1″, stays at 1.1GHz, and usually comes with six cell battery.

Depending on the processor, the HD graphics offers a different base and Turbo Boost clock speed. Currently there are three different models:
Power Saving e.g. Celeron 847: base 350MHz, Turbo 800MHz
Celeron e.g. Celeron B810: base 650MHz, Turbo 950MHz
Pentium e.g. Pentium B950: base 650MHz, Turbo 1100MHz
–Since the processor is a 847 is this information correct?
