The latest tablet from French device maker Archos is a mid-range tablet with an 8 inch, 1024 x 768 pixel display and a 1.6 GHz dual core processor. It’s called the Archos 80 Cobalt and while Archos hasn’t revealed pricing yet, the company tends to use the Cobalt name for its mid-range devices, which suggests that this tablet is more likely to carry a Nexus 7-like price than the similarly-sizediPad mini-style one.

Archos 80 Cobalt

The Archos 80 Cobalt runs Google Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, has 8GB of storage, and 1GB of RAM. There’s also a microSD card slot for additional storage.

Archos says the tablet has a 2MP rear camera, 0.3MP front camera, WiFi, a mic and speaker, G-sensor, micro USB port, and headphone jack. It measures 8″ x 6″ x 0.45″ and weighs just over a pound.

If I had to guess, I’d that 1.6 GHz processor is a Rockchip RK3066 CPU paired with Mali 400 graphics.

The tablet ships with the Google Play Store and other Google apps including Gmail, Google Maps, and Google Talk.

  1. i bought an archos 80 g9 turbo for $160.00 recently. love hdmi, speed, can’t wait for jelly bean ONLY if jelly bean supports all the usb features of the ICS android.

      1. good point. I forget that feature is coming. I don’t think Archos has reputation for upgrading firmware however.

        1. Huh? i would say they are on par with Asus. Hell, it may well be that their Gen10 devices will be updated far into 4.1 if not 4.2.

          1. I owned an Archos 70 and Arnova 10 G2 so maybe I owned the wrong thing.

          2. I accidentally wrote gen10 when i meant gen9 btw. I think perhaps their previous issue had been rapidly changing hardware platforms, making it a mess to maintain firmwares for multiple devices generations. My gen9 80 turbo got a point bump the other day that pretty much match what is on their recently released gen10 101 xs.
