The Archos ChildPad is a 7 inch tablet designed for children. But despite the cartoon-inspired wallpapers and kid-friendly colors, the $129 has some halfway decent specs, including a 1 GHz ARM Cortex-A8 processor, and 1 GB of RAM.

Unfortunately the $129 model also has a low resolution 800 x 480 pixel resisitive touchscreen display. But it looks like there’s a slightly better model on the horizon.

J&R is taking pre-orders for a new $139 model that has a capactive touchscreen display.

The new model has the same low resolution 800 x 480 pixel display. But the capacitive touchscreen will be more responsive than a resistive display. Capacitive touch panels recognize electric impulses from your fingers, allowing you to lightly touch the screen to interact with the Android operating system.

For the most part, Android apps are designed for capacitive touchscreens, so the $10 premium for the new ChildPad is probably worth it.

Then again, for $135, you can pick up a refurbished NOOK Color with a 1024 x 600 pixel display from the B&N eBay store… and that might be an even better deal.

  1. For kids, I think resistive touchscreens are better. I just need to look at what my daughter does with my touchpad, and see that drawing (for example) is more fun on my aging n900 (resistive)
