As expected, Apple is launching the latest version of its operating system for notebooks and desktops. OS X 10.10 Yosemite features a refined design, updated core apps, and better support for working together with both iOS 8 and iCloud Drive.

Yosemite is available as a free download from the Mac App Store starting today.

The latest version of OS X can synchronize all of your documents with Apple’s iCloud Drive cloud storage service and you can view files from any of your iOS devices on your Mac.

The new Continuity feature lets you pick up where you left off when moving from one device to another, and allows you to receive text messages or phone calls on your Mac when your phone is nearby, or use the WiFi hotspot feature of your phone just by bringing it near your Mac.

Apple has updated the Safari web browser with an improved new tab page that shows stacks of all open pages as well as links to sites that are open in Safari on your other devices. The company says the browser is also fast, but energy efficient — offering up to 2 hours more battery life when surfing the web than other browsers, and up to 3 hours more time when streaming videos.

Mail has been updated to support markup in forms and pictures, signatures in messages, and Mail Drop for sending attachments up to 5GB in size.

The latest version of iTunes has a new shelf which shows the latest additions to your media library, iWork has a new sidebar that summarizes comments, offers new text effects in the Keynote presentation app, and more. The new version of iWork is also available as a free download starting today.
