OK, I’ll admit it. I’m a bit overwhelmed by the amount of news coming out of Asus today. Rather than write a dozen separate posts, I’ve decided to do a few highlights posts. In part one, we noted that Asus expects to ship 12 million notebooks next year, began bundling a 30GB USB hard drive with the Eee PC 901 in South Korea, and credits the sucess of the Eee PC lineup for helping Asus achieve bring in revenues last month at a time when the US and possibly global economy is shaky at best.

In part two, we’ll take a look at a few other Asus/Eee-related stories that have popped up in the last 24 hours or so:

  • The Eee PC S101 gets an official US price: $699. Up until now we’d been relying on rumors about the price of this top-of-the-line Eee PC. Now Laptop Magazine reports that Asus is confirming those rumors. The S101 will cost $699 and it will launch in the US on November 1st.
  • Would you like a virus with your nettop? Asus has admitted that some of the Eee Box nettop (low price, tiny desktop computers) the company shipped in Japan contained a virus called recycled.exe. The problem seems to be contained to Japan — for now.

And finally, Eee PC News.de dug up the first hands-on video I’ve seen with the new Eee PC S101. Check it out after the break.

  1. Mobilecomputermag has a much better 2-part hands on with the S101.

Personally, I love the styling and it’s finally a weight/size vs battery power I could live with but it really is overpriced for purely cometic changes. The keyboard and the guts are basically the same. Roll on price vuts. Maybe I can afford it by Xmas?

  2. Lolz! The Recycler virus was going around my university campus for ages. Pretty embarrassing to have it show up in computers straight out of the factory.

  3. Yeah, what’s the word with the Linux version? 32GB in one SSD is much better than 16GB SSD and 16 GB in an SD card 🙁
