Want to run third party apps, install custom fonts, or make other changes to an Amazon Kindle eReader? Then you’ll need to jailbreak it, because Amazon doesn’t officially support those features on its E Ink devices.

The good news is that there’s a pretty active community of Kindle hackers, and not long after Amazon launched its second-generation Kindle Paperwhite, independent developers figured out how to jailbreak it.

You can find tools and instructions at the MobileRead forum. The bad news is that the process isn’t exactly user-friendly or foolproof, so proceed with caution.

Amazon Kindle Paperwhite 2 jailbroken

In order to jailbreak the 2013 Kindle Paperwhite, you’ll need a computer running Linux and a basic understanding of command line tools.

Jailbreaking any device allows you to access files, directories, and settings that wouldn’t otherwise be available. With the Kindle Paperwhite this lets you do things such as installing custom screensavers, altering fonts and margins for reading eBooks, and making other changes to the device’s behavior.

The new jailbreak method also works with 2012 Kindle Paperwhite models.
