Amazon Prime Instant Video lets subscribers in the US stream thousands of movies and TV shows for $79 per year. The service launched a few years ago as an add-on for the Prime service which offers subscribers free 2-day shipping but Amazon hasn’t increased the price in the US… yet.

Now Amazon is rolling out Prime Instant Video in Germany and the UK, and the company is hiking the subscription fee in each country. It could be a sign of things to come for US subscribers.

Amazon Prime Instant Video in the UK

In the UK the new version of Amazon Prime will run £79 per year, while in Germany it’ll cost €49. Current subscribers will get to use the new video streaming service for no additional charge until it’s time to renew — so you can save a bit of cash if you sign up before Prime Instant Video goes live on February 26th in those countries.

Amazon is combining two services to get the new Prime Instant Video in those countries. Basically instead of paying for Prime shipping and the Lovefilm video service, customers can now pay one price for both. The deal is actually cheaper than paying for the two services separately — but still more expensive than paying for Amazon Prime alone.

I don’t see any evidence that Amazon plans to offer a shipping-only option for folks that don’t want the Netflix-like instant video streaming. But if you only want the video service and don’t need free shipping you can continue to pay for a Lovefilm subscription.

Amazon has also said it’s considering a price hike in the US, but the company hasn’t announced any changes to its Prime service in the States yet.
