While these are refurbished models, which means they’re pre-owned, they have been restored to their original factory condition and tested. Amazon guarantees that they’ll work like new and offers the same 1-year warranty you’d get with a full priced Kindle Fire.
The Amazon Kindle Fire features a 7 inch, 1024 x 600 pixel IPS display with wide viewing angles, a 1 GHz TI OMAP 4 dual core processor, 512MB of RAM, and 8GB of storage.
It doesn’t come with the Google Play Store, instead shipping with the Amazon Appstore. That means you have easy access to tens of thousands of Android apps instead of hundreds of thousands. But the selection is still pretty decent — and the Kindle Fire offers tight integration with Amazon’s digital services.
That means you can use the tablet to buy and read books, magazines, newspapers or comic books from Amazon, rent or purchase videos and download or stream them over the internet, or access Amazon MP3 from the tablet.
Or if you’re willing to void your warranty you can go all-out and root the tablet and install a third party ROM such as CyanogenMod or AOKP in order to get a more traditional Android experience.
The Kindle Fire doesn’t have an SD card slot for extra storage or a camera for snapping photos or making video calls. So it’s not necessarily the best option for every potential tablet users. But at $139, it’s a pretty good bargain for anyone looking for an eBook reader that can also surf the web and handle multimedia content or for smartphone users looking for a device with a larger screen.
