Amazon has unveiled its next Kindle eReader, the Kindle paperwhite. It’s the first device to  use a new type of E Ink display which makes the background look more white than gray. It also has a higher resolution display than earlier Kindle models, and an adjustable side-light which lets you read even when you’re in a dark room.

It’s available for pre-order for $119 starting today, and will ship on October 1st.

Amazon says the Kindle paperwhite has 25 percent more contrast than last year’s Kindle Touch, and 62 percent more pixels — with a 212 pixels per inch display.

Taking advantage of the extra resolution, Amazon is adding more fonts and font size options.

The company also redesigned the user interface, making the Kindle paperwhite work a little more like the Kindle Fire. Instead of a list of books and collections, the home screen now shows a virtual bookshelf with a list of your titles. You still navigate by tapping and swiping your fingers on the touchscreen.

Amazon says the eReader can get up to 8 weeks of battery life — even with the light turned on. Disabling the light should give you even more run time.

The eReader measures 0.35 inches thick and weighs 7.5 ounces.

Like other Amazon Kindle devices, users can synchronize books they purchase (or borrow from the Lending Library or a public library) across devices, so you can start reading on a Kindle paperwhite and continue reading on your phone, tablet, or PC.

Amazon will also offer a Kindle paperwhite 3G eReader which will let you download books and synchronize your progress without a WiFi hotspot. That model costs $179, and also goes up for pre-order today and ships in October.

  1. Ya, i think its right …..Paperwhite little bit work like kindle fire . but kindle paperwhite taking more advantages high screen contrast, and adding more fonts and also font size . And i thing more new launch of kindle paperwhite 3G eReader which will let you download the more books

  2. This seems pretty awesome.

    From Amazon:
“We worked on Kindle Paperwhite for over two years to perfect the
uniformity of the built-in light, flattening out a fiber optic cable
into a sheet, and nanoimprinting to ensure perfectly even distribution
    of light.”

This doesn’t seem like a side light as in the Nook Glowlight. This seems like a whole new technology.
