Have an Amazon Prime membership, and need a cheap tablet? Amazon’s offering Fire tablets for as little as $35 today, but only to Amazon Prime subscribers. New members can always sign up for a 30-day free trial for Amazon Prime to score the discount though.

Fire tablets might be most useful to Prime members, thanks to the perks you get such access to streaming music, movies, TV shows, and eBooks. But you can also access thousands of apps and games from the Amazon Appstore, surf the web, watch Netflix… or install the Google Play Store to make Amazon’s tablets feel a bit more like other Android-powered devices.

I picked up a Fire HD 8 earlier this year and I’ve found myself using it more than any tablet I’ve had since my Google Nexus 7 (2013) stopped working.

Here’s a roundup of Amazon’s Fire tablet deals:

These prices are good through September 16th. And if you’re planning on hacking your Amazon Fire tablet, you might want to check out these articles:

Amazon is also offering deals on some refurbished products, which come with the same 1-year warranty as new devices. For example, you can pick up a refurbished Amazon Echo for $80 today, an Echo Dot for $38, or a Fire TV Stick for $35.

  1. Stock Fire7 is pretty bad (terrible performance and annoying ads), but with CM firmware most of issues are fixed and it makes pretty decent low end tablet. Speaker is still mono but ok, camera is bad though

  2. I’m using my Fire 8 a lot too–mainly Kindle use.

One thing that might be helpful for others. It started lagging really badly–the (obvious in hindsight) fix was rebooting.

    1. > It started lagging really badly

Did you do anything extra to it like installing Google Play, etc? I’m still running stock FireOS. I’ve had mine, approaching 2 months now and no lagging issues at all. It’s gone through two updates (now at version 5.4.0.1). Also installed tons of apps – mostly through the Yalp Store.

On my end, the main thing I noticed is how hot it gets in the sun – it does so very quickly! Unlike my phone, where you can feel the burn – the HD 8 only feels warm. My phone gets hot, it lags like crazy. My HD 8 gets hot, it only feels warm and runs pretty smooth.

fyi… I have the GSam Battery Monitor running as a notification. Even in cool weather, when the sun hits the screen, the temps have gotten as high as 118 degrees really fast (but, like I said, it still only feels warm). Regardless of how it’s running, I turn off the screen. I wonder if it’s a heating issue on your end?

In any case, I highly recommend GSam Battery Monitor (or similar) to keep an eye on cpu temp. The screen really hates direct sunlight.

Also, “AnExplorer” (a file manager on Amazon Store) is great. It has a feature on the home screen that lets me see running processes. It displays running background processes that the regular “Settings -> Manage All Apps” does not display. It’s been helpful in helping me spot odd behaving apps – which I quickly uninstall.

      1. I installed GP right away, so I don’t think that was it. Not sure what caused it, but it’s only happened the once.
