Pro audio equipment maker Alesis has been making accessories for iPhones and iPads for a while, helping turn Apple’s portable devices into the brains of full-fledged digital audio recording gear. But where earlier tools like the iO Dock simply added high quality audio inputs to Apple’s tablet, the new iO Mix adds a 4-track mixer with physical knobs and inputs.

Alesis iO Mix

The iO Mix features four combo XLR/quarter inch jacks and individual gain, pan, trim, and EQ buttons for each input.

The mixer support 48V phantom power so you can use it with condensor microphones. You can also switch to guitar-direct input so you can record directly from a guitar without an amplifier.

You can hook up multiple sets of headphones to monitor your work, and there are even RCA composite outputs which you can use to send audio to a TV.

The iO Mix channels is designed to work with most iOS apps that support audio input, so you can use it with the mobile version of GarageBand or a similar app to record multiple track projects.

Every now and again you still hear people make the claim that tablets like the iPad are only good for consuming content, not for creating it. This is the sort of accessory that shows this simply isn’t true anymore. While it’s likely that most people use tablets to surf the web, play games, watch videos, and enjoy the work of others, it’s certainly possible to use tablets in very creative ways.

In fact, you can use the iPad to record, mix, and edit music even without an external device, but the accessory from Alesis certainly makes the tablet much a much more capable digital audio tool.

Alesis hasn’t yet announced the price or release date for the iO Mix.
