Looking for a high capacity SSD that you can cram in a netbook, UMPC, MP3 player, or pretty much any other little device that might not have room for a 2.5 inch disk? Active Media has introduced the new SaberTooth ZX, which is a 1.8 inch solid state disk that holds up to 128GB of data.

The SaberTooth ZX has a parallel ATA/IDE interface and supports write speeds up to 38 MB/s and read speeds up to 80MB/s.

While that makes the SaberTooth ZX kind of slow by SSD standard, it’s unusual to find a drive with this much storage capacity in such a small space, and Active Media is charging a premium. The SSD for $380. If that’s too rich for your blood, the company also has a 64GB version which is available from Amazon for just under $200. The 32GB model is available for $120.

  1. The slow performance is the killer. Much of the point of an SSD is to get the faster speed. The speed can result in a “system performance” boost, so leaving that on the curb is a really horrible idea. Also paying that much for that little gain is just a horrible idea drizzled with a terrible idea as sauce.

  2. Even though the price is high now, I think the price will come down eventually when newer drives come out. Look how newer hard drives have made earlier ones to come down in price. Being on the trailing edge of technology is more affordable. I will wait for the 128 gb comes down in price before buying. Until then, I would be more interested in the 64 gb and 32 gb drives. Why pay more for the hard drive than ones pays for the entire netbook?

  3. Considering the price for this capacity SSD usually goes for about a hundred more it’s not too bad but it’s relatively low performance easily accounts for this.

It’s 5mm thickness does mean it will be compatible with vast majority of computers that accept 1.8″ drives. But only it’s 64GB and 128GB drives are really worth considering, as you can get a considerably faster SSD for the stated 32GB drive price.
