Acer appears to be preparing to launch a wireless display adapter which you could connect to a TV to beam content from a PC or mobile device… or something.
An Acer device called the MWIR1 showed up at the FCC this week, and it’s described as a “Wireless for HDMI 60 GHz” device, but there aren’t many other details available.
According to FCCÂ documents, the device was tested with an LCD monitor and a DVD player and it draws power from its host system. It’s not clear if that means it’s an MHL device that can draw power through an HDMI port or if you’ll need a separate USB cable to supply power.
It’s also not clear if this is a simple wireless display device like Microsoft’s Wireless Display Adapter or if it’s a more versatile device like Dell’s Wyse Cloud Connect (which is basically a pocket-sized workstation) or Google’s Chromecast (which can be used to mirror a smartphone display, but which also handles audio, video, games, and other online content).
The little information we do have to go on suggests this’ll just be a simple wireless display module though.
Too many dongles. I have so many things plugged to my TV it’s starting to look like Davy Jones.
