After unveiling a whole new line of laptops in August, Acer is starting to sell some of the first members of the Acer Swift family.
One of the first models available for purchase is a $650 Acer Swift 3 laptop with a 14 inch full HD display, a Core i5 Skylake processor, 8GB of RAM, and 256GB of solid state storage.
But a more exciting (and more expensive) option is the new Acer Swift 7. It’s a 2.5 pound notebook that measures less than 0.4 inches thick. Coming soon to Amazon and other stores for $999 and up, the Acer Swift 7 is already available from the Acer Store (although it’s priced at $1099 for some reason).
The Acer Swift 7 features an Intel Core i5-7Y54 Kaby Lake processor, a 13.3 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixel IPS display with Gorilla Glass, 8GB of RAM, and 256GB of solid state storage.
It supports 802.11ac WiFi and Bluetooth 4.0, features a 720p webcam, and sports two USB 3.1 ports and a headset jack. The laptop has an aluminum unibody design with a non-removable battery that Acer says should be good for up to 9 hours of run time.
Keep in mind that you’re paying a premium price for a sleek design. This notebook may have a Core i5 processor, but it’s a 4.5 watt Y-series chip, which means it’s basically a faster version of Intel’s Core M3 processor.
Still, Intel suggests that while peak performance may be better with a 15 watt Kaby Lake-U processor, it should be tough to tell the difference during most day-to-day tasks. I haven’t had a chance to test that claim yet, but I’m looking forward to finding out if Intel is exaggerating.
