Bottom to top: ExoPC, Iconia Tab, Moto XOOM, iPad 2

The folks at Netbook News managed to pick up an Acer Iconia Tab A500 10 inch Android tablet in Taiwan. The tablet doesn’t officially go on sale for a few days, but they fond a store that was willing to part with a unit.

The Iconia Tab A500 has the usual buzzword specs, including a 1 GHz NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual core processor, Google Android 3.0 Honeycomb, and a 10.1 inch, 1280 x 800 pixel capacitive touchscreen display. It cost about $600 in Taiwan, which means it may be cheaper in the US (most consumer electronics devices are).

The tablet display has a rather glossy finish which you can see pretty clearly in the video after the break thanks to sunshine coming in through a window. That’s not unique to this tablet — I have a Motorola XOOM tablet sitting on my desk right now, and I’ve never found a better mirror than this tablet.

The tablet is larger than the Motorola XOOM and the Apple iPad 2, but it looks like it may be a hair thinner than the XOOM.

If there’s anything that sets the Iconia Tab A500 apart from the crowd it’s a custom user interface with software Acer designed for the tablet. The apps include a custom clock, and media software for managing eBooks, movies, music, and other media. You can get a better look at the software in the second video below.

  1. I find this 16:10 aspect ratio weird in portrait mode. I don’t think it will display PDF properly in full page mode. I think Apple made the right decision to keep it in 4:3 ratio. If you’re just watching movie or playing games, then the widescreen would do well. Unfortunately, that’s not all i do most of the time.

    1. Actually it’s closer to A4 format (typical to PDFs) than 4:3. Especially with the menu bar at the bottom taking some space.

  2. Can’t wait for the Motorola/Honeycomb honeymoon to be over so the price wars can begin. Asus and Samsung(what a 180 for them since the tab huh?) already have good teaser prices, hope Acer follows suit.

  3. I think Acer is offering a keyboard set up with their windows version the w500. Why not on the A500? No clue

  4. I like the look of the Acer tablet. . . but I really want a dock setup like the Asus Eee Pad Transformer. That’s really the only form factor I’m going to look at so if competitors can’t offer something similar no matter how good their tablets look I’ll be going with Asus.

  5. Confused: is it Acer or Samsung? Tablet at start of video is Samsung, but appears not to be that otherwise discussed. Or am I missing something obvious?
