Acer is reportedly working on a new Chromebook which will be the company’s first model to feature a convertible design. Accordingf to WinFuture, the Acer C738T Chromebook is a laptop with an 11.6 inch touchscreen display and a 360 degree hinge. Push the screen back all the way and you can hold the computer like a tablet.

The Acer C738T Chromebook could also be one of the first models to ship with an Intel Braswell chip.

Braswell is basically the slightly more powerful version of the Intel Atom Cherry Trail tips used in tablets and low-power laptops or convertibles.

The Acer C738T is said to feature an Intel Celeron N3150 processor. That’s a 6 watt, quad-core chip with Intel HD graphics.

WinFuture reports the Chromebook also features 4GB of RAM, 16GB of eMMC storage, dual-band WiFi, Bluetooth, a 720p camera, and a 1366 x 768 pixel IPS display. It has HDMI output, an SD card reader, a USB 3.0 port, and a USB 2.0 port and the convertible laptop weighs about 3.1 pounds.

Acer wouldn’t be the first company to release a Chromebook with a 2-in-1 design. The upcoming Asus Chromebook Flip also has a touchscreen display and a 360 degree hinge, and Lenovo’s ThinkPad Yoga 11e Chromebook has been bending over backward for use in tablet mode since last year.

Information is minimal, I would love a USB Type-C connector, but that can work with USB 3.0, so who knows. “@linuxite:disqus , it IS pure Linux, ChromeOS is a Linux kernel. @Guest Windows 10 will not work well on this platform (and frankly, I prefer a simple, fast and secure system I can do work on, not just surf and troll)
    @AmiRami:disqus , I am a fan of both ChromeOS and Android. The advantage of Android is APPS, most of which work offline better than ChromeOS (for example Evernote) but the gap is closing, and in the world of the laptop form factor, ChromeOS is, I believe, the best ongoing option.

    It is adding features and capabilities ( like being able to access my NAS server on my home network via a plugin) and I think will come to use the expanding world or HTML5 technology as time passes.
    I am a Linux fan, and user, but ChromeOS, via the Chromebox I am typing this on, and two Chromebooks are where I spent most of my time.

  2. Will it run pure Linux? If not, who cares. I don’t want my data going from Google -> NSA.

    1. Nothing you can do short of writing/compiling up your own OS and largely avoiding the internet will curtail cybersnooping, its not just NSA but corporates, foreign gov & criminal orgs. Linux is just as buggy and full of holes in that respect. What really matters here is legacy boot support. Acer, you almost got the formula. 16gb eMMC is also skimping, c’mon eMMC aint all that expensive, i’d like to see 32-64gb eMMC in there. Does somebody at Acer read the reviews?

  3. Some USB-C with Power Delivery would be nice to see even in this segment.

    I am tired of hauling so many laptop chargers around, it really compromises the portability of these machines.

  4. it would be nice if you could flip it over and get android. Or better yet, just Android, skip ChromeOS

    1. Even with the new Braswell Atom CPU it will still be significantly slower than the C720s with the Haswell Celerons.

      1. Depends, the advantage is only core per core but the Intel Celeron 2955U in the C720s is only a dual core, with no Hyper Threading, but if they use a quad core Braswell then the advantage switches… while the Braswell does have the more powerful Gen 8 based GMA…

        So what you state will only be true if they stick to a dual core Braswell…

      2. You’re probably right, I was surprised to see a global –bench of 1300+– for the n3150, forgot that the 2955u was still at 1400+. We’ll see if the architecture and embedded gpu will make up for it. Still a lot less crippled than many machine of that class.

        edit: nope, https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Pentium+N3510+%40+1.99GHz reaches 1646, so synthetically higher than 2955u score of 1479. Still I’ll wait to see field reviews.
