You can’t actually order them yet, but the Acer and and Samsung Chromebooks introduced by Google earlier today are already showing up on Amazon.com. You can sign up to receive an email when the Chrome OS laptops are available.
The Acer Chromebook features a 1.66 GHz Intel Atom N570 dual core processor, 11.6 inch, 1366 x 768 pixel display, 16GB solid state disk, and 1.3MP camera. The laptop measures 11.6″ x 8.6″ x 0.8″ and weighs 3.26 pounds (This may not be accurate, as Google says the Acer Chromebook weighs 2.95 pounds). It’s expected to sell for $349 and up.
The Samsung Series 5 Chromebook will run $429.99 and up. The base model features a 12.1 inch, 1280 x 800 pixel display, 1MP camera, 16GB SSD, and Intel Atom N570 processor.
The Acer notebook will be available in black, while there will be black, white and silver versions of the Samsung Chromebook.
Both companies will also offer 3G capable models which connected to Verizon’s wireless network in the US for up to 100MB of free data. You’ll have to sign up for a subscription if you want more data.
Amazon has already set up a Chromebook Store where you can find details on all available (or soon-to-be-available) models, as well as videos exploring the features that make Chromebooks stand out from ordinary laptops.
Needs Pixel Qi or some other sunlight readable, low power solution.
ONly interested if they have a Pixel Qi screen and the battery saving tech that Brad covered at the Pixel Qi booth at CES 2011.
Pixel Qi is amazing, can’t wait for a decently priced tablet to be released in the UK.
Smartbook where art thou? Ah yes, you died a fiery death even before you took flight. Fly Google fly! Wait! Now that Google is creating that instant on thang, people will flock. Forget about price. Forget about uselessness, oops I mean usefulness! Forget about that tablet you have been saving for. You want Google Chrome OS and cloud storage! Wait! What is chrome OS and what is cloud storage? Now there are tablets, ultraportables, thin and lights, netbooks, notebooks, laptops, hybrid tablets, subnotebooks, and now….chromebooks! Yay! Thanks Google for the product that showed up a year late to the party.
Actually, that seems about right for an 11.6 inch model. Acer is promising 6.5 hours of battery life while Samsung is claiming 8.5.
Although now that I look again, Google says the Acer model will weigh 2.95 pounds… I wonder if Amazon is including the package weight…
Isn’t that a bit heavy for an 11.6 incher?
Does it get crazy-awesome battery life?
