Think that new quad-core ARM chip NVIDIA is showing off is hot stuff? How about an ARM-based chip with 480 cores. While Calxeda’s new chip design may not feature the 3D graphics chops that NVIDIA’s Project Kal-El has, the company has unveiled a design for a ARM-based server that would bundle 120 ARM-based processors, each with four cores. In other words, the server would have 480 ARM-based cores.

Each low power processor node would use around 5 Watts of power. With 120 nodes, the server would still use quite a bit of electricity, but it would be an energy sipper compared to some other multi-core servers.

ARM-based chips are popular choices for smartphones, tablets, and embedded systems. But this isn’t the first time we’ve seen a company take a low power chip designed for mobile computers and use it in a server. SeaMicro is offering a similar solution based on 512 Intel Atom low power x86 netbook chips.
