The Asus Zenbook 17 FOLD OLED is a portable Windows 11 computer with an Intel Core i7-1250U processor, 16GB of RAM, and 1TB of storage. Thanks to a flexible OLED display though, it’s a little hard to decide if this is a laptop or a tablet… it’s probably safest to say it’s both.

First unveiled during the Consumer Electronics Show in January, the Zenbook 17 Fold OLED isn’t available for purchase yet. But that could change soon – Asus has scheduled an event for August 31 when the company says it’ll reveal more information about the computer.

At this point, we already know most of the key features of the Zenbook 17 Fold’s specs and design. But Asus is encouraging users to sign up to receive updates when the computer goes on sale.

In terms of specs, the Asus Zenbook 17 Fold OLED has a 17.3 inch, 2560 pixel display with a 4:3 aspect ratio, up to 500 nits brightness, 100% DCI-P3 color gamut, HDR support, and a 0.2ms response time.

The screen can fold at the center, effectively giving you two 12.5 inch, 1920 x 1280 pixel displays with a 3:2 aspect ratio. You can use the top screen as a display and the bottom as an input device with a virtual keyboard. Or you can place a physical keyboard accessory atop the lower screen for a true laptop experience.

The unusual design also opens the possibility of using the Zenbook 17 Fold in other ways. For example you could bend it at the center and hold it like a book with one page of content on the left and another on the right. Or you could stand it up on a table or desk and use a wired or wireless mouse and keyboard for an all-in-one PC experience.

Under the hood, the computer is powered by Intel’s Core i7-1250U processor, which is a 15-watt, 10-core, 12-thread chip with two Performance cores and eight Efficiency cores plus Intel Iris Xe integrated graphics. Other features include 16GB of onboard LPDDR5 memory (which is not user upgradeable) and a 1TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD on an M.2 card (which means it should be upgradeable).

The computer has two Thunderbolt 4 ports and a 3.5mm audio jack, a 5MP camera with IR support for face recognition, stereo speakers, a microphone array, and support for WiFi 6 and Bluetooth 5.

The Zenbook 17 Fold OLED comes with a 75 Wh battery and a 65W USB Type-C power adapter. And the tablet/notebook hybrid measures 379 x 288 x 13mm (14.9″ x 11.3″ x 0.5″) and weighs 1.8 kg (4 pounds).

Asus hasn’t revealed pricing yet, but hopefully we’ll find that out later this month.

  1. It seems to me it could be a little less heavy even considering the 75Wh battery. Its a 17 inch screen .. but folded 😀 LG gram 16 weighs 1.2 kg .. im guessing its the materials needed for rigidity and the hinge etc.

  2. I really like the concept of a foldable tablet like this, but the idea of using it in a laptop orientation is silly and worthless to me.

I like the idea of using it like a normal 4:3 screen, propped up with a kickstand or something, along with a bluetooth keyboard. It’s like a portable All-in-one PC.

I’m interested in seeing the pricing on this. But coming from Asus, something tells me that this will be quite expensive, have poor inventory availability, and will likely only be available in an extremely limited number of RAM/storage configurations.

Asus does a poor job of committing to its unique/innovative products.

    1. Not entirely true. Asus did commit to the Flow & XG Mobile series. Otherwise you’re right because they bring far too many variations to market.

Like you said, this 17″ foldable looks incredibly innovative but a near miss with lost potential. For me, it also needed a 120hz OLED like their upcoming Vivibook N7601 and the ability to double as a portable monitor with input ports.

      1. True, but the Flow and XG Mobile products weren’t exactly outlandishly innovative products. All of the technology was there, other companies were already doing it (in less turn-key ways), and it was something that people were already demanding before Asus released them.

The foldable tablet idea is more risky. There aren’t any obvious signs that people want a folding 17″ tablet, and knowing Asus, they aren’t going to put in the effort into the marketing required to allow it to really have a shot.

My thinking is that Asus is either going to get lucky with this idea, or it will die 3 months after doing a lap through the tech-review world.

        1. This thing will either be the biggest hit or a white elephant.
Price will have a large impact.
If its $4k imho its DOA.
If its $2k it will be highly exciting and could show real promise.
At $2k people are really willing to work through any bugs, at $4k it could become like the lenovo fold (dead).
