Gateway computers were a common site at PC stores in the 1990s and early 2000s before eventually disappearing into computer history after Acer acquired the company and eventually retired the brand.

Now Gateway is back. Sort of.

Acer has introduced a new line of Gateway-branded laptops and tablets that are exclusively available from Walmart.

Update 9/16/2020: Acer owns the Gateway brand, but the company isn’t actually producing these new laptops. See below for more details.

I first started running across these new Gateway PCs a few days ago when searching for products to include in Liliputing’s Daily Deals posts, but I wasn’t really sure what to make of them. But now Acer is making things official.

According to a press release, there will be 11 new devices at launch, with most models focused on providing entry-level and mid-range hardware for affordable prices. But there are also a few high-end devices.

Here’s a run-down of the Acer/Gateway/Walmart launch lineup. Note that some models aren’t yet available for purchase, and while the MSRP prices are listed, some models are already on sale for as much as $300 off the list price.

Android Tablets

Windows Laptops

I don’t know if the Gateway brand is actually a selling point for anybody anymore. But these are basically Acer laptops in all but name (and cow-colored logo).

Update: Actually it turns out that these laptops are produced by a Chinese company and imported to the US by budget laptop company EVOO to be sold under Acer’s Gateway brand. That’s probably not great news if you were hoping for a high quality product.

  1. I have an actual Walmart EVOO Gaming laptop. Which I have used DAILY for the last 7 months and – for the price – you can’t beat it. I paid $1050 for it delivered. And the ONLY problem I have had with it – is that sometimes a few of the keys on the left side of the keyboard misfire…

EVOO Gaming Laptop 17; FHD 144Hz Display, THX Spatial Audio, Tuned by THX Display, 9th Gen Intel i7-9750H, Nvidia RTX 2060, 1TB SSD, 16GB Memory, Windows 10 Home

  2. if Wal-Mart really wanted to impress me they’d have a tablet with active digital stylus, and LTE

  3. We used Gateway computers – desktops – when we first got computers in the office I worked in (the office was kind of slow in getting computers). I thought they were nice.

  4. Wow they even kept the old Cattle-pattern logo.

When I was a kid, I remember really disliking Gateway computers because they were advertising some of their Pentium systems as being “686” architecture, when Intel and the rest of the industry decided to not continue that naming convention.

I was more of a fan of Packard Bell PCs back then.

  5. Does this mean that Onn is Offff?
I’m impressed that they have such a complete lineup up Wal-Mart exclusive products.

  6. I was shocked that the Android tablets were 1 GB RAM only but the website lists them both as 2/32.

  7. I have an old eMachines laptop from the era where they were owned by Acer. I have had to replace the hard drive and RAM but everything else still works fine even after ten years of use. I currently run Xubuntu on it, even with the cheap Celeron 900 CPU I can still watch 360p video and surf the web on it to this day. I would say it was worth the $299 my mother paid for it in very early 2011 (I inherited the computer after she passed away earlier this year).
