The new LG V60 ThinQ 5G has the kind of specs you’d expect from a 2020 flagship phone… plus a few bonus features. Sure, it has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 processor and X55 5G modem, 8GB of RAM, multiple cameras, and an in-display fingerprint sensor. But the phone also has a 32-bit Hi-Fi quad DAC, four microphones (and two speakers), and a sizable 5,000 mAh battery.

It’s also the latest LG V series phone to support an optional LG Dual Screen accessory that lets you double the phone’s display space.

LG says the LG V60 ThinQ 5G will be available in North America, Europe, and Asia in March.

The phone has a 6.8 inch, 2460 x 1080 pixel OLED display, support for up to 256GB of storage, and a microSD card reader for up to 2TB of removable storage.

Wireless capabilities include WiFi 6, Bluetooth 5.1, NFC, FM radio, and support for 5G, LTE, 3G, and 2G networks.

The smartphone has  stereo speakers, a USB 3.1 Type-C port, support for Qualcomm Quick Charge 4+ fast charging, and an IP68 water and dust resistance rating.

On the front of the LG V60 ThinQ 5G you’ll find a single 10MP camera, and on the back there are three cameras/sensors:

  • 64MP primary
  • 13MP super-wide (117 degees)
  • Z Camera (Time of Flight)

As a standalone device, the phone measures 8.9mm (0.35 inches) thick and weighs 214 grams (about 7.5 ounces). But if you opt for the Dual Screen case accessory, the whole thing becomes a bit chunkier — measuring a combined 14.9mm (0.6 inches) thick and weighing 348 grams (12.3 ounces).

But what you get is not only a second 6.8 inch display that’s pretty much identical to the first, but also a small 2.1 inch monochrome cover display that you can use to view notifications without flipping the phone open.

The LG Dual Screen accessory also has a 360-degree hinge, allowing you to flip the second screen all the way around to hold the phone in one hand, prop it up using the case as a stand, or view two side-by-side screens in a pseudo-tablet mode.

While Microsoft is planning to release its first Android phone with dual-screens later this year and Samsung, Xiaomi, and Motorola have all released phones with foldable displays, LG has actually been doing optional/detachable dual screens for a while — last year’s LG V50 ThinQ and LG G8X ThinQ smartphones also both supported optional LG Dual Screen cases.

Whether that’s actually a good thing is up for debate. But at least it’s a thing — and it does allow LG to sell a multi-mode phone with a more reasonable starting price since you don’t need to pay for the second screen unless you really want one.

LG hasn’t announced pricing for the new phone yet, but according to Gizmodo, it will have a starting price that’s likely well under the $1000 some rivals have been charging for recent flagships.

  1. The pictures make it look like you’ll be able to use the USB-C port while the dual screen is plugged in this time, which is a nice change.

    1. Well, if you look the center of the bottom of the phone in picture #2, it looks like it has some contacts on it, sticking out just slightly. I think that maybe they’re going to give you some weird magnetic charger head that you can put on there (since having a slot to plug a usb-c cable into wouldn’t fit; the “chin” is roughly as long as the connector). The speaker cutout is to the right of that.

    2. The top of the phone has the Ejector Tray for SIM+microSD and a pinhole for the second microphone. The right side has the Power button. The left side has the Volume Buttons and an Action button. The bottom has the Headphone Jack, USB-C, and Mono-loudspeaker (which also houses the primary microphone).

When you place the phone into the Dual-Screen it connects via the USB-C port. All the other buttons/etc can still be used or accessed except for the Ejector Tray. The outside of the case has a Magnetic Connector. So you can put a mini-cap/dongle on the USB-C port, and it will snap on like Apple’s MagSafe Charger on either side. I’m not sure if it affects Charging Speed or Data Speed, but I doubt it. It’s a neat solution.

  2. Does LG have their DeX like thing going on? I’m thinking about what to get next year instead of my S8, and since Samsung ditched the 3.5mm they are a no-go. This however seems all right, if a little on the large side, and the DAC is actually something I look forward to, but I use DeX quite a bit, and would like to keep the feature. The other thing is rooting, but I’m sure it’ll be solved by the time I get there (and no, not for piracy, for adblocking and sysadmin apps that need it).

Sorry for my ignorance, but what does rooting has to do with piracy? As I understand these are two, completely separate, unrelated topics.

      1. I just wanted to get ahead of the “I bet you only want to pirate games!” comments on why I would want to root my phone. Cause I do get this a lot. But sure I guess a system wide ad-blocking solution, where I can purge the ad-boxes from freemium software is a form of piracy too, so maybe it _is_ for piracy?

        1. Pirating = downloading APK files from 3rd party, often questionable sources outside the Google Play Store. A completely different genre than rooting your phones for whatever reason. This is my understanding. OK, whatever. 🙂
