Before tablets and smartphones captured much of the market for handheld computing devices, there were UMPCs, or ultra-mobile personal computers.

The product category kind of died out after Microsoft and Intel abandoned the platform about a decade ago. But over the past few years we’ve seen a growing number of tiny laptops and convertibles with 7 to 9 inch displays that seem to be reviving this niche computing category… in more ways than one.

While modern mini-laptops from companies like GPD and One Netbook are super-small… they’re not exactly super-cheap.

Chuwi, Peakago, and a few other companies are bringing cheaper options to market. But with the holiday shopping season approaching, some retailers including GeekBuying, Gearbest, and DealExtreme are also running sales that make some GPD and One Netbook devices a little more affordable.

Here are some of the day’s best deals.

  1. I recall reading here that OneNetbook (I think it was the One Mix 3/3S) was still looking into getting LTE working. Are they still looking into resolving the performance/signal issues or did they give up? Also, I hope the module they’re using supports US Verizon LTE bands.

    1. I was eyeing the One Mix 3 a while ago when it was initially announced to have a built-in LTE option. Too bad it never happened.

Although, what I really want is a handheld UMPC with built-in LTE. I got the GPD MicroPC thinking I’ll just Wi-Fi tether my phone but that ended up killing my phone’s battery too much and USB tethering was too cumbersome. I just want to take it out of my pocket and start using it. My MicroPC is back in its box sitting in a closet now. The battery is probably dead since it’s common with the IGG and early retail units.

I wonder if users will get a fully working desktop OS on the f(x)tec Pro1 (Android QWERTY slider phone). It seems people who pre-ordered one have started getting theirs this week. I’ll keep an eye on it.
