GPD has announced that it’ll begin taking pre-orders for the upcoming GPD P2 Max through an Indiegogo campaign set to launch at 10:00AM Bejing time on June 26th. If you’re in the US, that’s 10:00PM Eastern on June 25th.

The P2 Max is a 1.5 pound laptop with an 8.9 inch, 2560 x 1600 pixel touchscreen display, support for up to an Intel Core m3-8100Y processor, up to 16GB of RAM, and up to 512GB of storage.

It’s a pretty tiny computer by laptop standards… but it’s actually the largest notebooks GPD has released to date, which should make it a little easier to use… if a little harder to fit in your pocket.

Update: The crowdfunding campaign is now live,  and so is our preview of the GPD P2 Max.

The company will offer two configuration options at launch:

  • Intel Celeron 3965Y/8GB/256GB for $529 (crowdfunding) or $635 (retail)
  • Intel Core m3-8100Y/16GB/512GB for $705 (crowdfunding) or $842 (retail)

Those prices make the little laptop pretty competitive with some of the other mini-laptops hitting the market this summer.

For example, an 8.4 inch One Mix 3S Yoga with an Intel Core m3-8100Y processor, 16GB of RAM, and 512GB of storage sells for $900… although that little laptop does feature a convertible tablet-style design, support for an optional digital pen, and a backlit keyboard.

Chuwi’s MiniBook with an Intel Core m3-8100Y is going for just $530 during crowdfunding, but that model has just 8GB of RAM and 128GB of eMMC storage, while the GPD P2 Max has a faster SSD.

GPD’s also been at this longer than most other companies in the space. The GPD Win handheld gaming PC arguably kicked off the modern age of handheld computers, and since then GPD has also launched the Win 2, the GPD Pocket and Pocket 2, and the GPD MicroPC.

Not only is the P2 Max the largest to date, but it’s also the first with a webcam and the first with an actual touchpad rather than an optical touch sensor.

Want a better idea of what that looks like? The Phawx already has a demo unit and he’s posted an unboxing and quick impressions video that includes, among other things, a size comparison with a GPD Pocket 2, a 13.3 inch MacBook Pro.

I’ll be publishing my own preview of the GPD P2 Max soon, so stay tuned for more details and performance notes in the coming days.

  1. This is the device I have been longing for. But the battery life estimate makes me sad. If it can’t get six hours of battery on a Core M I am going to have to hard pass. Which is a shame.

    1. @Mark, yeah, I’m with you. I will wait for Brad’s review on the actual battery life for this P2 Max. Even though it can be charged using PD PowerBank, I still hope that the battery life is much longer, else I have to go with One Netbook Mix Yoga 3/3S as the battery life is longer, but have to shell out more for it.

Chuwi’s also have the latest MiniBook on Indiegogo right now. Not too fancy due to they are using the eMMC storage, sad. ( should have opted for SSD version instead ).

What on earth, Celeron ? It’s kinda dinosaur and slow..these people shud go for at least Pentium Gold like the Surface Go..as the minimum entry with the i5 / i7 being the top range.

  2. Looking forward to your comparison Brad. The GPD Max seems to have 3-4 hours of web browsing with a 35wh battery. So no better than my GPD1 crappy battery life. Do you know how big is the battery in the OneMix? (If you don’t you can use batterybar to check). Battery is really the Achille’s heel of these devices, and the increased resolution only makes things worse….

    1. OMY3 battery is 33.11 Whr.

I’d also take Phawx’s estimates with a grain of salt — he’s pretty hard on his computers. 🙂

Now that we’ve finally got a few mini laptops with usable keyboards, I plan to try to spend some time using them for daily blogging work and see how many hours I can go before the battery dies.

Hopefully I’ll have some real-world results next week.
