Lenovo may be preparing to shake up its laptop branding conventions. Right now the company sells a line of business notebooks under the ThinkPad brand, and consumer models under the IdeaPad and Yoga names. But Notebook Italia recently spotted two Lenovo notebooks with unusual names at a trade show in China.

The Lenovo ThinkBook S laptops come in 13 inch and 14 inch sizes, and according to a few listings at online stores, they could hit the streets in Europe in late May for around 1,000 Euros. There’s no word on if or when we’ll see the new laptops in the United States.

Update: They are. The ThinkBook 13s and ThinkBook 14s are launching in the US in May with starting prices of $729 and $749, respectively. Lenovo is positioning them as laptops for the small business market.

According to Notebook Italia, the new laptops seem to be positioned as replacements for previous-gen IdeaPad laptops, but they have new designs featuring metal boddies, slim bezels, and 180 degree hinges that allow you to fold the screen flat against a table.

Both the 13.3 inch and 14 inch models ahve 1080p displays, but for some reason the smaller one is brighter (with 300 nits compared to 250 nits for the 14 inch screen). The laptops feature 720p webcams with a built-in privacy shutter so that you can block the camera when you’re not using it without resorting to masking tape.

The ThinkBook 13s and 14s are expected to ship with up to an Intel Core i7-8565U Whiskey Lake processor, up to 16GB of RAm, up to 512Gb of solid state storage, and optional support for AMD Radeon 540X graphics, at least for some models.

The 13.3 inch laptop weighs just under 3 pounds, while the 14 inch model is 3.3 pounds.

    1. Think pads are not what they used to be… Because nobody was buying those old heavy bricks with 3:2 screens and your nostalgic clickity clank keyboards!

      1. Kinda hard to know if anyone would buy them since nobody makes them, the whole industry followed Apple like a bunch of lemmings when the Air came out with the crappy keyboard. Air had to do it, the entire point was to be as thin and light as possible. But now you can’t even buy an eight pound gaming “laptop” with a real keyboard.

It’s simple. The 14″ screen size is considered budget these days while the 3.3″ size is a bit more premium.

  2. This has long been the nightmare for Thinkpad aficionados, that Lenovo will market rebranded consumer notebooks as Thinkpads, water down the brand, and thus feel empowered go farther down the road of turning other Thinkpads into merely expensive Ultrabooks with fewer and fewer of the qualities that have made the brand special.

Seeing a “Thinkpad” without a pointing stick is just intolerable. It’s bad enough that the 11e is like this, but at least there’s a good excuse there (it’s an education model and kids pull the pointing sticks out left and right) and the machine is otherwise build like a brick with a great keyboard. This thing is just an abomination.

    1. Yes, I really feel like Lenovo should have a separate lineup for this.

I would love it if Lenovo would return to the T420, or earlier. The pre-chiclet keyboard, the lid-latch, the durable plastic body.

      1. ..and get rid of that SOLDERED RAM from the newest Thinkpads! That one reason is a definite _no-no_ when i buy a new laptop.

Also improve user upgradability all-around atleast to back to where it was a few years ago. You should be able to easily open the backside without breaking half of the ridiculously fragile clips!
