Xiaomi may be selling truly wireless earbuds for as little as $15, but Apple continues to charge more than 10 times as much for its AirPods.

Now Apple has an even pricier (although probably better) option. Apple subsidiary Beats is introducing its first truly wireless earbuds.

The Powerbeats Pro are coming in May for $250.

Like Apple’s AirPods, the new Powerbeats Pro are completely wireless, with one earbud going in your left ear and the other in your right. They have an Apple H1 chip and support hands-free “Hey Siri” functionality.

But they’re design to create a better seal in your ears for better noise reduction and they wrap around your ears so they’re less likely to fall out.

That could come in handy if you’re wearing the earbuds during a workout, which Beats says you can do, since they’re also sweat and water resistant.

Powerbeats Pro also also designed to offer up to 9 hours of continuous usage, which means you won’t have to stop to charge them as often as AirPods (or most other truly wireless earbuds).

Speaking of charging, the earbuds come with a charging case that offers up to 1.5 hours of additional battery life from a 5 minute charge. Beats says the earbuds + charging case offer a combined 24 hours of battery life.

Powerbeats pro will be available in black, white, blue, and “moss” brown.

My initial impulse is that $250 is an awful lot to pay for a set of wireless earbuds when other companies are selling pairs for well under $100.

But then I remember that not all headphones are created equal. While I’m perfectly happy to wear a $23 set of earbuds when walking around the city, I use an $80 set of over-ear headphones for podcast editing… and I’ve had my eye on a $200 set of professional-quality cans for a while.

So I guess good headphones are worth what you’re willing to pay for them.

  1. If you are going to get some professional phones for monitoring get some AKG 240s They are half the price of the Beyers and far better. Go to any prostudio and you will see the things and for a reason. They are lightweight, your ears won’t start hurting after extended wear and they sound phenominal. They used to cost a whole lot more several years ago until Chinese companies started cloning them. Save yourself a fortune.

  2. Do you know what’s really sad?
Powerbeats Pro will probably be top 5 TWS headphones when it comes to sound quality in this category.
TWS suuuuuucks and even Sennheiser Momentum TWS has a lot of problems :'(

When it comes to TWS, so far I can only recommend 20$ QCY T1c. If you buy something more “fancy” you are literally wasting your money, because you are not getting better sound anyway.

My ears tend to favour Sennheiser HD800 over DT880, BUT I have yet to buy DT880 for long term use and not just short tests. DT880 are plain better for anyone with mechanical keyboard or kids 😉 with HD800 you do not block anything.

      1. Oh, they are really similar when it comes to the desing O.o
QCY was first on the market, but I get the feeling only design is almost identical.
Anyway 15$ I am willing to spare to find out, THX mate! 😉

      2. Oh, it does not support AAC like QCY does 🙁
Sadly no decent codec support is a no go for me.

  3. Excellent choice! Beyerdynamic’s DT 880 measure wonderfully (very comparable to the illustrious Sennheiser HD 800 though zealous audiophiles will insist otherwise) and are owned and trusted in hundreds of studios dotting the globe.

Unfortunately, the same is not so for Apple’s craptastic earphones, though, and ditto for Beats. Both measure abysmally and aren’t worth the pile of cash they price them for. They are classic examples of aesthetics over audio. It is fitting two companies with poor sounding audio devices joined forces.

    1. @Hifihedgehog: But you know you are comparing apples (no pun) to oranges, right? How do you pocket the Beyerdynamic and the Sennheiser?
