The parade of mini retro consoles continues. Since Nintendo launched the NES Classic in 2017, we’ve seen an SNES Classic, PlayStation Classic, Neo Geo Mini, and modern efforts to capitalize on the Atari and Intellivision names.

So it was really just a matter of time before Sega got in on the action and unveiled a Sega Genesis Mini.

The company says it will be available in the US and Japan starting September 19th.

Update: It’s up for pre-order from Walmart for $80 for a version with two game controllers. A single-controller version is also expected to be available this fall for $60.

The Sega Genesis, which was known as the Sega Mega Drive outside of the US, was originally released in Japan in the late 80s and became a popular home game system in the 90s. The new mini version is designed to look like the original… but it’s just over half the size of the original, measuring just 6″ x 4.6″ x 1.5″.

Sega has also added HDMI output so you can use the Genesis Mini/Mega Drive Mini with modern TVs. The system supports 720p and 480p output.

The retro console has a micro USB power adapter and comes with a single game controller, but you can also purchase a second controller for multi-player games.

Speaking of games, the system doesn’t play cartridges like the original Sega Genesis. But it comes with 40 titles pre-loaded, including Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Gunstar Heroes, Shining Force, Space Harrier II, Castlevania Bloodlines, and Comix Zone.

US pricing hasn’t been announced yet, but the Sega Mega Drive Mini will sell for about $60 in Japan, or roughly $80 if you buy a version with two game controllers. I’d expect the US pricing to be similar.

  3. 80 bucks with two wired controllers? Too dang high. Who is this for exactly? Aren’t there already retro Sega Systems out already, for a lower price even? There is an inevitable price slash, just like there was for the Playstation, which can now be had for $40 pretty much anywhere.

  4. Funny how these companies suddenly embraced the retro, while only a few years ago any Nintendo employee would get a heart attack if they heard the word “emulation”. And yes, these all run emulators, and some of them even open source emulators, the very ones they tried to kill with fire for years.

    1. Admittedly, SEGA has been the most open to it though for a company who has been stuck in a between-a-rock-and-a-hard-place financial situation for some years now, that makes them much less inclined to risk alienating customers.
