HP’s first virtual reality headset designed for use with a Windows PC was priced at $329 when it launched a few years ago. The company followed up with a $449 “professional edition” model last year, featuring the same specs, but a more comfortable design.

Now HP is kicking things up a notch with the introduction of the new HP Reverb VR headset.

It weighs less, has a more customizable design, and features higher resolution display panels. It also costs more — an HP Reverb Consumer Edition will ship in late April for $599, while a higher-priced Pro Edition is coming in June (with a washable fabric face cushion and and a 2-foot headset cable).

The HP Reverb headset weighs about 1.1 pounds, down from 1.8 pounds in HP’s earlier model. It comes with an attached headset, but you can remove it if you’d prefer to use your own headphones. And it comes with a set of motion controllers and a DisplayPort to mini DisplayPort adapter.

The biggest upgrade though, is the display. HP’s new headset features dual 2.9 inch, 2160 x 2160 pixel displays, for a combined resolution of 4320 x 2160.

In other words, the new headset offers about twice the resolution of the previous-version, which had dual 1440 x 1440 pixel displays.

  1. This is a very interesting new segment for VR headsets, it’s like a high-resolution segment without a clear gaming focus. The resolution of this headset is somewhere between 4k and 5k. It’s about 4.5K. It will be interesting to see what people will use this for.

    Personally, I would like to see a push towards a wider field of view, before we get into 4K and 5K.

    There is already a company doing this. The Pimax 5K and Pimax 8K. They offer the benefit of a much larger field of view. They are around 200 degrees (most headsets are 100 or 110 degrees), but that seems to benefit the experience, and not so much the core functionality. I believe the 8K 200 degree view is a waste of pixels, because you don’t need such a high pixel density on the outer part of your vision. It would be cool to see a 200 degree VR headset with 1000ppi in the centre of your view, and maybe 500ppi around the outer parts of your view.

  2. When will a company release a VR headset with 144Hz display or even more? 1440×1440 and 144Hz per eye would be much better than this massive resolution

    1. I’ve got one of the 1080×1200 per eye ones and struggle to read text using it (in elite dangerous). It’s so bad that I doubt 1440×1440 would solve it, so personally I’d rather we upgraded the resolution first.
