The Taihe Gemini is a portable display that’s been generating a lot of buzz since it was first announced in January. Taihe has been taking pre-orders through crowdfunding campaigns, and plans to ship two versions of the monitor in May: a 4K model and a 1080p touchscreen version.

The company sent me a 1080p prototype to test recently, and while it’s pre-release hardware, it largely delivers on the promise of a portable, battery-powered touchscreen display. I can use it to add a second screen to my laptop on the go, give small devices a bigger display area, and connect a USB cable to make use of the touchscreen.

You can pre-order a Gemini for $239 and up. But now that I’m done with my review unit, you can also enter our contest for a chance to get mine for free!

What you can win

I’m giving away one lightly used Taihe Gemini portable 1080p touchscreen monitor prototype. Note that the version Taihe ships to customers may look a little different — the company has announced plans to change the port layout and include a USB-C charger, for example.

Build quality may also be better on the final production units. The model Taihe sent me has a kickstand that doesn’t stay in place if you tilt the screen back too far. There appears to be a bit of rust on some of the metal behind the kickstand (it was there when I unboxed the display, I swear!). And the demo unit came with a full-sized HDMI cable, even though the display does not have a full-sized HDMI port.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Anyway, you can check out Liliputing’s Gemini preview for more details about the display’s specs and performance.

  1. Sign me up, I’ve just turned consultant so am spending far more time working from a laptop than I used to and am definitely feeling the lack of monitor real estate.

  2. I appreciate you making this available to others. It’s a really cool device.

  3. Blue is my favorite color and that’s…relevant to the discussion at hand?

  4. Pretty interesting and would love to be ale to try it out one.
    Good luck everyone

  5. My company is moving from out office to a co-working space and this looks like a great way to keep my productivity up!

  6. It would be great if I won this Portable Monitor. I could use it for my sports photography and ham radio hobbies.

  7. Wow! This looks really good! Would like to get my hands on one of this! Wonder how it would be paired with the Samsung Note 9!

  8. Great review on the Gemini. Always enjoy the daily deals. Thanks you

  9. I remember looking for something like this a few years ago; was trying to put together a “portable computer” kit in lieu of a laptop that the “core” could be upgraded while keeping the components that could stay the same (monitor, keyboard, mouse, battery).

  10. Magic lucky comment. I’ve been hoping Magedok will put out something with a battery like this. I need to view the internet like Elvis watched TV.

  11. Yes please! This will work perfectly for my Samsung DeX pad. (Brad, you want to encourage mobile computing, don’t you? :))

  12. “This contest is only open to persons with a valid shipping address in the continental United States.”

    🙁

    1. Yeah, I wonder what proportion of liliput readers are not residents of continental United States? Would be nice if Brad at least once in a while did a giveaway for them. It might have happened though I’ve never seen it during the years I’ve been reading this site.

        1. I might have missed it. A pretty fair approach would be if giveaways were made to match roughly the proportion between US only and non-US based readers of the site. So if a third of the readers are non-US then cater every third giveaway to them.

I imagine there is some extra hassle with sending international but to Europe and quite a few other countries there shouldn’t be that big of an issue. Recipients should be prepared to themselves pay any extra customs/taxes of course.

  13. Entering comment for the contest. Thank you very much for this contest!

  14. Liliputings giveaway brings all the boys to the yard,
    And I’m like,
    My comments better than yours,

  15. I have the Note 9 & the Official Samsung Dex Cable. Now all I need is a bluetooth keyboard and mouse with the Taihe Gemini Monitor & I can complete my mobile computing experience & take it with me on the go.

  16. It’s an interesting product and I could see using this in a portable office situation. Currently, my wife and I share a home office, but she frequently works from home. I like the idea of her being able to put it away when I want to use the desk or we need the space for other projects.

  17. I’ve been wanting to get a new monitor for myself to use for streaming and having this would definitely help me out!

  18. I would love this moniter I just started my otr truck driving career and I’m a huge gamer JARVO IG xbox plus my game the division 2 is bout to drop this will help me in so many ways thanks for listening

  19. I need the double vision. Single displays are for cyclops, I have two eyes, I’m tired of the lazy eye having an excuse. Send me the display and help me force the lazy eye back to work.

  20. I would love to get this, this looks like one of the better portable screens out there.

  21. Have some Raspberry Pi projects I would like to try with this monitor.

  22. Thank you for reviewing – Love to win, good luck to all. Have a great weekend!

  23. I’d love to have one of these for work in coffee shops. Screen real estate is very important to me, and until now I haven’t found a good solution for expanding it while on the go.

  24. Thanks for a great Blog! This display would be a great addition to my tiny computers (raspberry pi, atomic pi, beaglebone, GPDwin).
