It’s never been cheaper to put a voice-activated digital assistant in your home (if that’s the sort of thing you want to do). Amazon’s selling 2nd-gen Echo Dot smart speakers for $20 today, which is the lowest price to date (matching Amazon’s Black Friday pricing).

Or you can buy a 3rd-gen Echo Dot for $30 (or a 2-pack for $50).

Prefer Google Assistant? Google is selling the Google Home Mini for $29, and Best Buy is offering its Insignia Voice speaker with Google Assistant for just $20.

  1. From sales and ‘comes-free-with’ offers both this year and last I have now accumulated quite a few of these smart speakers. Google is my own choice. I went from one the first year the full size Home came out to two when they went on sale the next to now so many Mini units that they cover the entire house pretty much.
They are in every bedroom – replacing more than one alarm clock. They are near every seating area. Basically in any place people might spend any length of time in the house.
I admit I’ve gotten so used to them that I have sometimes been at a friend or family member’s house and unthinkingly just said ‘hey Google’ when I wanted to get some info. Nobody gives me the info but everyone looks at me and some people laugh.
So this year I picked up a few for gifts too.
A few off hand conversations and questions during the last few months to weed out potential religious objections or tin-foil-hat worries and my plan was set. Within a couple weeks I will spread this helpful virus to at least three or four more homes beyond my own.
    That’s progress for you.
