The Dell Inspiron Chromebook 14 2-in-1 features a 1920 x 1080 pixel IPS touchscreen display, a 360-degree hinge that lets you use the computer in tablet, tent, stand, and laptop modes, and a Wacom EMR pen for pressure-sensitive input. The pen tucks away in a slot in the bottom of the computer when you’re not using it.

Dell says this is a Chromebook aimed at folks who need more power and better features than you get from the company’s entry-level laptops. If you used a Chromebook 11 for school, this might be the machine you buy after graduation.

And it’s priced accordingly: the Dell Inspiron Chromebook 14 2-in-1 will sell for $599 and up when it hits the streets on October 23rd.

The laptop is powered by an Intel Core i3-8310U dual-core Kaby Lake Refresh processor and features 4GB of DDR4-2400 RAM and 128GB of eMMC storage.

While a faster SSD would be nice, the processor and display help set this laptop apart from entry-level Chromeboks. It also has a backlit keyboard and it should support Android apps out of the box.

With a starting price of $599, this Chromebook is priced very much like a lower mid-range Windows laptop… so it’s clearly aimed at folks who are already sold on the idea that Chrome OS isn’t just for cheap laptops. But the operating system has become a lot more capable in recent years. Not only will the Dell Inspiron Chromebook 14 2-in-1 support Chrome OS and Android apps out of the box, but I’d be surprised if it didn’t also run Linux apps… although I suspect that’ll remain an opt-in feature for the foreseeable future.

But the fact that this is the first Dell Chromebook to be included in the company’s Inspiron lineup is a pretty good indicator that Dell considers this to be a mainstream laptop, not a specialty device. It’s also an indicator that while it has better build quality and features than some earlier Chromebooks, it’s not in the same category as the company’s high-end XPS or Precision line of devices.

The 14 inch convertible Chromebook has two USB 3.1 Type-C ports, a USB 3.1 Type-A port, a microSD card slot, and a headset jack. The laptop features 802.11ac WiFi and Bluetooth 4.2 and it’s powered by a 56 Whr battery that Dell says should be good for up to 10 hours of run time (although the company tends to be pretty generous with battery life estimates, so I’d expect real-world usage to be a little lower).

The Dell Inspiron Chromebook 14 2-in-1 measures 13″ x 9.1″ x 0.7″ and weighs about 4 pounds.

  1. I haven’t been able to find a ton of info on the Android gaming performance of Chromebooks. Are these things viable alternatives for that compared to, say, a Galaxy Tab S3 or a MediaPad M5?

  2. Compare to upcoming Acer Chromebook Spin 13. This one starts at 8 GB of memory.

4 GB is not acceptable in this price range anymore IMHO.
