Meizu launches M6s smartphone with Exynos 7872 and a fingerprint reader on the side

01/19/2018 at 8:19 AM by Brad Linder 3 Comments

Chinese phone maker Meizu’s latest Android handset launches this week for about $150 and up. But like many of the company’s other smartphones, the Meizu M6s punches above its weight class.

For about $150 you get a phone with 3GB of RAM, a 2:1 (18:9) aspect ratio display, 16MP rear and 8MP front cameras, and at least 32GB of storage. It’s also the first Meizu phone to put a fingerprint sensor on the side of the device and one of the first smartphones to feature Samsung’s new Exynos 7872 processor.

That’s a chip that bundles two high-performance ARM COrtex-A73 CPU cores with four energy-efficient Cortex-A52 CPU cores and Mali-G71 graphics. It’s more of a mid-range chip than a top-tier processor, but it’s still pretty good for a $150 phone.

The fingerprint sensor might be the most interesting thing about the Meizu M6s. It’s on the side of the phone and it rests in a cut-out below the power button, which should make it easy to find with your fingers without looking at the phone. Meizu says you should be able to unlock the phone in as little as 0.2 seconds.

While some companies are embracing full-screen phones by placing fingerprint sensors on the back of the phone, under the glass, or nowhere at all, only a handful of companies have tried putting them on the sides of phones.

Since there’s no home button or fingerprint reader on the front of the phone, Meizu implemented a “Super mBack” virtual button that lets you use on-screen gestures by interacting with a virtual button at the bottom of the display. You can tap, swipe, or long-press it to do things like go back, go to the home screen, or switch between apps.

The Meizu M6s also has a 3,000 mAh battery, a USB Type-C connector, and a 5.7 inch, 1440 x 720 pixel display. It seems like screen resolution is the one area where Meizu did cut corners in order to keep the price low.

Ugh, what’s wrong with stock Android’s virtual button implementation? It took me a while to come to it over physical (non-capacitative) buttons, but once I did I came to prefer them because they are standard, adaptable, and never wear out. Why reinvent the wheel? I’m not opposed to the fingerprint button on the side though and separate. My Nextbit Robin had an integrated side power button fingerprint reader and, while I loved how easy it was to use it, I didn’t like how I could never see my lock screen to check the time or glance at a quick notification because it was so quick at reading my fingerprints.

Believe it or not, FlymeOS is one of the best Skinned Android OS out there. It’s not half-done, inconsistent mess like MIUI. It’s not as laggy as TouchWizz. I still prefer Stock Android though, like a MaterialDesign Nexus. The only problem with FlymeOS is that its basically closed-source, and boot loader’s locked, so getting support for your device, you are fully-dependant on Meizu. And they are pretty much dependant on MediaTek/Samsung for source code updates as well. Otherwise, the devices are great, the prices are great, but they lack the scale for proper customer support. Once they start using SoC’s from Qualcomm (better sources, documentation, community support), and slightly better camera modules from SONY (eg >IMX 270) instead of the cheap Chinese OmniVision (eg OV12890) cells…. then they might produce real flagship killers. The killer move is if they manufacture an actual flagship this year with high availability, like the… Read more »
