The GPD Win is a tiny computer that looks a bit like a Nintendo DS, but it’s a full-fledged computer complete with an Intel Atom Cherry Trail processor, 4GB of RAM, 64GB of eMMC storage, and Windows 10 software. It has a tiny keyboard that you can use to type with your thumbs, and pretty much all the buttons you need to play PC games (or console games if you use an emulator).

Sure, it’s not the most powerful gaming PC around, but it’s certainly one of the most portable. And it has enough horsepower to play many older games as well as some less resource-intensive modern titles.

GPD sent me a demo unit to review last year, but it broke shortly after I started kicking the tires, so I wrote a mini-review, a did a partial teardown and then sent the device back to GPD. The company eventually sent me a replacement unit and I’ve never had a problem with it, but I also never quite found the time to do a full review.

Now that a GPD Win 2 is set to launch in 2018, I figured maybe I should do something with the first-gen unit I’ve got sitting on my desk. So it’s time for a giveaway!

This contest is for a free, lightly used first-gen GPD Win with Windows 10 software. New units sell for about $350 to $400 at stores including Newegg and Gearbest.

Update: This contest has now ended. Congratulations to our winner, Edward Hunt!

  1. My 6 year old Son would love to work on this with scratch for programming!
He is already using a raspberry Pi 3, and built 5 games.

  2. I have a GPD Pocket, which is essentially the same hardware in a more laptop-like form factor. But I’m intrigued by the gaming controls.

  3. I’m one of those silent readers that reads daily but never comments, but in this case… Hello!

  4. Would allow me to relegate two much older, much larger machines to the tinkering shelf.

  5. I was contemplating getting one, the timing for this contest is great. Thanks for keeping Liliputing going.

  6. Something like his has been on my radar for travel purposes. I need full Windows sometimes and portability but I don’t want an expensive tablet or ultrabook. Ever since the OQO hit the scene, I’ve always looked into these little systems. Only now do they seem portable an powerful enough though.

  7. I’ve been a fan of windows on ultra mobile devices ever since I bought a Samsung Q1 back in the day. I’d love a GPD Win both for work and play.

  9. Thank you for everything, I really miss the podcast, I hope it spins back up

  10. I miss UMPCs… My Sony Vaio UX was one of my favorite computers, long after it had become ‘technologically outdated’. Have been trying to talk myself into either this, or the GPB Pocket 7.

  11. Magic the Gathering Online in my pocket would be living the dream. 😀

  12. I’ve always had my eye on GPD’s portables. Between this and the GPD XD they make some kit.

  24. Based on your great review(s) of the original device (hey, EVERYbody breaks things!), GPD has an awesome device on their hands; I can’t wait to see the Win2 device.

  25. It reminds me of the old Game Gear device… 6 AA batteries and something like a 180 x120 screen.

  26. Ive never won anything like this… but its worth a shot! Would make for a nice Christmas present to myself.

  27. It is the small pc build for gaming perfectly. thanks for this giveaway. in your website bring me more benefit about technology.

  28. Been hoping someone would create something like this for years. Thanks a bunch.

  29. Amazing device!
I wonder if Intel will cotinue to produce these budget powerful mobile processors…

  30. Hi there first time at your blog! Wonderful idea for a contest good luck to everyone!

  31. Read Liliputing daily. Great reviews. Always great information. Thanks.

  32. I’ve seen this device before, but it was well out of my price range. I would love to have this, thank you!!!

  33. how sweet it would be to win a UMPC for Christmas. thanks for the giveaway.

  34. Shaweet. Skyrim on the go (at low settings, 25 FPS :D). Still, hope I win. This looks like a good machine for light Steam titles and emulators. Thanks for the Giveaway!

  35. I tried to build something like this back in 2007 out of a netbook that I was running an NES emulator on.

It did not go well. I need to put that failure behind me!

  36. A portable emulator is something that would be great for gaming. The control configuration looks similar to a Nintendo 3ds. It would make a great travel companion. Would love to play Kingdom hearts or ff7 on it.

  37. It’s impressive how small they’ve been able to make a full desktop OS platform.

  38. I am glad you’re doing this giveaway, I’ve been using a PSP for the longest time and it’s getting long in the tooth. Anyway, I am throwing my hat in for this giveaway.

  39. I love panda bears, but I also love elephants. The problem is I just love both so much I can’t decide. Please select me for this giveaway to help me choose, thx

  40. Seems like this could also be quite useful for WiFi network surveying or driving remote control cars/drones!

  41. Would love to use this to play Cup Head, it would be the perfect platform for that game.

  42. Thank past reviews and again for the give away.Gpd one brand that I’m going to keep on eye as fan.

  43. I have always been interested in the true capabilities of these devices. Also, whether or not they can handle other OS environments.

  44. Hello, I would like to win this mini laptop I’ve been in the market for won so why not try and win one

  45. I’ve been looking at one of these for a while, anyone see Nintendrew’s video on it? It’s pretty cool.

  46. Thanks, Brad, for the opportunity. I read this site every day – it is essential to me.

    Good luck to everyone.

  47. Crossing my fingers. This is the present I actually wanted to give myself but I can’t afford it right now.

  48. Can not wait for the Gen 2 to be released, I can only IMAGINE the specs on it

  49. I read your review, and I’d love to win this rad little gadget. It would be cool to have as a portable emulator “rig”.

  50. I bought one of these and the keyboard went out after 2nd week of use.
It still works but I have to use an external keyboard, which defeats the purpose of having it. I went through the website to get it fixed but after trying 3-4 times I gave up. However, it is a great little device, that I am sure they have fixed now. To bad for me.

  51. I’ve been interested in it for while, not sure whether to get the win or wait for win 2.

  52. The portability is great. I wanted a gpd since the first edition. I actually convinced two coworkers to buy then by talking about it.
Now I feel left out Lol

  53. I love the portability and power of the device and always wanted to try one but the price so expensive

  54. Awesome… They don’t put a real OS on it first thing…. Arch Linux

  55. I had a dream of my self playing with a computer this small around 20 years ago but it was funny science I remember having to move the thing around as the mouse trackball was in the bottom and it was the latest windows 98. So it become my project at computer class and I made it out of cardboard funny that this all came back to me when I first saw the windows GPD.

  56. Learned of GPD last year, but unable to invest in product. I’m very interested in mini computer.

  57. I’ve seen this thing a few times recently and would love to have one for my son, but can’t afford it due to a recent surgery. Thank you for doing this!

  58. Would like this for portable retro gaming emulation. Seen a few YouTube videos doing just that.

  59. Sooo cuteee so portableee. I want it soo bad. 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

  60. Oh man I been checking out videos on the gpd win and gpd xd for a while now, I would love to win this.

  61. I would like to see more powerful portable hand held Windows 10 computers

  62. I’ve always been interested in these little gaming PCs. My girlfriend would love this.

  63. Accidental double post, hope I don’t get disqualified because of it 🙁

  64. Gpd is awesome I’ve had my XD for more over a year and half, and I’ve been using it every chance I get

  65. Been interested about this device for awhile, kind of impressed they are already working on a new model

  66. I’ve been in love with the GDP Win since I watched a friend playing Final Fantasy XI Online on his, it’s so small yet surprisingly snappy. They were on sale at Walmart for 219.99 and I was committed to buying one of my own, but I got paid later that week and missed the sale, I haven’t seen them that cheap since.

  67. Would love something like this to use on the go. I had an old WinCE palmtop that I loved for it’s form factor but it was seriously underpowered.

  68. This just looks like a fun device to play with! And hopefully it would work with the Superbook I’ll eventually be getting…

  69. Did you have to lower the graphics on the Batman game to get it to run?

  70. I have one of these already, but would love another one. It’s pretty awesome. Being able to play Portal on the go is the best.

  71. This device looks perfect for living in Japan due to constantly traveling on trains and planes. I want to put LaunchBox on it.

  72. Good for emulation great for getting back at some older PC games I haven’t played.

  73. Your blog is great, by the way! I read it daily. By the way…this has nothing to do with the give away. 🙂

  74. It seems like a neat portable device where you could run full programs. Kinda getting annoyed with the half apps that you get on mobile.

  75. I wonder how successful this will be. These didn’t gain much traction 10 years ago when everyone was making them. Then again, they ran Windows 7 which is not as touch friendly as Windows 10.

  76. That’s pretty wicked. I hope I get it—I’ve been reading the website for years!

  77. Aww man this is sweet! If i actually win this giveaway, this will be a great Christmas.

  78. It appears to be the best system ever. Can it play GameCube, nintendo ds, nintendo 3-ds wii, wii u playstation 1,2,3,4, or any xbox games?

  79. I wish more companies would get in on what GPD is doing with their small portables Windows and Android wise. Would love a modern Xperia Play equvilant.

    Also, love the site!

  80. Awesome. I’ve had to fight myself to hold back on purchasing one of these. If I hadn’t read of so many people having issues I probably would have one in my hands already. I am curious as to how much more powerful it is than my Open Pandora handheld. Maybe I’ll pick up the successor if the reviews are pleasant enough.

  81. I saw it in a couple of youtube reviews. Sounds like an awesome Christmas present.

  82. This is the first time I’ve heard of this mini computer and would love to give it a try.

  83. Fascinating device… but “Gaming PC” seems a bit like pure marketing jargon though, with those specs

  84. I ended up selling mine. I still wonder if I should have just kept it to mess with… maybe hack it into a little Chromebook. 🙂

  85. Love to check out playing a couple indie games I have on my backlog with this! It’d be a good way to spend the train commute!

  86. while the Keyboard seems a little tight, I’m sure that with some use, users of this device would get use to it. I myself don’t think I would be writing any reviews from it however.

  87. I would love to have one of these. Could come in use in so many car rides.

  88. A giveaway of this amazing device? I’m definitely gonna enter. A portable powerful device like this is just what I’ve been looking for.

  89. I tried for a while to get one but never could, so thanks for this opportunity.

  90. I could think of plenty of ways to put a handheld Windows machine to good use!

  91. Yikes, it’s the size of a cell phone screen. Not gonna lie, I want to try it out.

  92. It would actually be fun to play some older PC games or even emulate PS/PS2. Is it touchscreen though? Could play some Fallout or HoMM with a stylus.

  93. I’ve always loved the idea of a pocket-able PC that runs full Windows. I keep looking at the new GPD Pocket but it’s out of my budget. Love a chance to win this one though! Cheers!

  94. Longtime reader, first time commenter. 🙂 I’d love to get my hands on one of these.

  95. This would be cool to have! I love the concept of of ultra portable gaming devices.

  96. Thanks for the contest, looking forward to your review of the 2018 GPD Win

  97. Why no International Postage?
It’s not a very large parcel. I’m sure you have plenty of readers from Canada, UK, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa.

Not to mention other western countries like Sweden, Germany, France, Spain, Italy. Or other developed countries like Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, Mexico. Not sure about Russia, Brazil, India, and China.

    1. Agreed a bit disappointing especially if you support the site via Patreon. I understand the cost but would be happy to pay the shipping and customs

  98. I soul glove to own this as well. I have been looking at it for a long time.

  99. lol, enter by date is my birthday….. so *wink wink nudge nudge*? I’ve got their android handheld and its a great bit of kit, wanted the windows one, but man, is it much more expensive. Would totally love to have one to tinker on and play with.

  100. This would be the best portable remote desktop device and a player for a few light games. Probably plays videos nicely too. Nice!

  101. Ive been hoping something like this would come out for ages. It looks like the new one is a lot more thought out than this one was, but it still seems neat. Exactly what I’d want in my hands for a long flight.

  102. I really do miss the era of UMPCs. I used my OpenPandora a ton in college.
