Razer is probably going to announce its first smartphone on November 1st, but as is often the case, some of the details seem to have been leaked a little early thanks to a listing in the GFXBench database.

It looks like someone’s been running the benchmark test on a phone described as the “Razer Phone,” and while it’s possible the name was faked, the specs certainly seem plausible for a phone from a company best known for gaming products.

It has a fast processor, a lot of RAM, and a reasonably large amount of storage, among other things.

According to GFXBench, the Razer phone’s specs include a 2560 x 1440 pixel display and a 2.4 GHz Qualcomm ARMv8 processor with Adreno 540 graphics, which is most likely the Snapdragon 835 chip.

It looks like the phone probably has 8GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. There’s no word on whether we can expect an SD card slot.

The front camera is probably an 8MP model, while the rear camera is probably a 12MP camera with support for 4K video recording and HDR still photography.

While the GFXBench listing says the phone has a 5.7 inch display, I’d take that with a grain of salt, since the benchmarking tool has an inconsistent track record of getting that feature right.

It’s also worth noting that these are just the specs that are reported by GFXBench, and they tell us nothing about the phone’s design, any special features that may appeal to gamers, or the price. We should get more details on those things when Razer officially launches the phone on November 1st.

  1. My sense is that it Android gaming is picking up steam and taking share from xbox/playstation/desktop, with it’s primary impediment being powerful hardware.

The nvidia shield tv box for example has a really nice bit of hardware and mostly crappy games available, and a handful at best.

I suspect that Razer wants to get out in front of any potential trend and ‘be there’ if and when quality high powered games are released for quality high powered android devices.

    1. The problem with “be there” is that it’s largely irrelevant in a moving market.

So if Android Gaming does kick off, but it takes another 2 years, then the hardware is going to look very outdated.

      Think about 500MHz Cortex A8 -> 1GHz Cortex A8 now with dedicated GPU -> 1GHz Dual A9 -> 1.5GHz Quad A9 -> 2GHz Dual-Krait -> 2GHz Quad-Krait -> 2.5GHz QuadNewKrait -> 2GHz Dual A72 -> 2GHz Quad A73 -> 2.5GHz Quad A73 -> 2.5GHz Quad A75 … … … so on and so forth.

That method only works if you’re the innovator in that category, pushing the envelope, for instance Nvidia as being known for their Desktop Graphics devices.

    2. Nobody in their right mind will develop niche games for higher-end, costly hardware, mobile is mobile and those games need to work on a wide array of devices. It’s yet-another premise (make the hardware, the games will come) bound to fail, VR being the most recent example of this.

  2. I’m willing to bet the price is well above $1000, Razer may make quality gaming hardware, but they definitely play the brand name thing to bump prices (like Apple).

It’s a phone, the hardware won’t last more than 2-3 years, updates will be spotty at best – and it still only plays the same Android games are any other phone.

    1. Well I would assume it doesn’t just play stock Android games and that Razer are trying to make a Switch competitor but that is no easy feat.

If it is a regular Android phone and rely’s on game streaming then no-one will care.

  3. So it has average specs for any phone someone would actually want. I know the Xiaomi MI6 is under $500 with similar specs – so I can assume that This phone will cost at LEAST 3 bajillion dollars (because Razer).

    1. It’s got bleeding-edge specs from that list, hardly average.
      Your average Android handset has a 5.2 inch 1280 x 720 LCD screen, 8MP OmniVision-branded camera, 32GB eMMC 5.0 storage, and a MediaTek branded SoC that has the properties of 2GB’s LPDDR3 RAM, a 1.7GHz Quadcore ARM Cortex A53, and a 400MHz Mali-T720MP3.

The Xiaomi flagships (and OnePlus) are the exception, and not the rule.
You should probably compare the “Razer Phone” to the likes of the Sony XZ1, Moto Z2, Essential PH-1, Nokia 8 etc etc (ie/ “runner-up flagships”).

  4. I’ll just buy a green razor sticker and attach it to my current phone… after all they are just selling a whitebox phone anyways.
