Last month Acer launched a new Swift 3 laptop with an 8th-gen Intel Kaby Lake-R quad-core processor and NVIDIA GeForce MGX150 graphics.

But it looks like the company may be hedging its bet on the chip front. A listing for an Acer Swift 3 laptop with an AMD Ryzen 7 2700U chip showed up at the Geekbench website recently.

That’s interesting for a few reasons. First, Acer hasn’t announced this variant of its laptop yet. And second, AMD hasn’t officially announced that chip yet.

The Ryzen 7 2700U is expected to be a quad-core chip with integrated Radeon Vega graphics, and it’ll be part of the Ryzen Mobile chip family, which is also known by the code name “Raven Ridge.”

AMD’s Ryzen chips for desktops lack integrated graphics, but the upcoming Ryzen Mobile chips are expected to be Accelerated Processing Units (APUs), which means they’ll have both CPU and GPU features in a single package.

They’ll go head-to-head with Intel’s Kaby Lake-R chips, and it’ll be interesting to see how AMD’s new laptop processors compete when it comes to raw horsepower, graphics performance, and price.

It’s been a few years since AMD was really competitive with Intel in the laptop or desktop space. This year the company’s Ryzen chips for desktops have made a pretty big splash thanks to an excellent performance-to-price ratio. We should know whether the company can repeat that feat in the mobile space soon. AMD is expected to officially launch Ryzen Mobile by the end of the year.

thanks thatGuy!

  1. Add reliability to the list. I will never buy anything another AMD CPU again.

    1. I have own plenty of AMD cpus. They are plenty reliable. The Xbox One has had no issues, as compared to the 360 and its RRoD. Same goes for the PS4 which is also powered by AMD.

I have the original Athlon (Slot A), working from a Gateway desktop. I have an Athlon XP, that I used for 5 years. I have a Athlon 64 X2 I used for 3 years, then upgraded to a used Phenom X4. Had a couple of Phenom II X4 machines for a business, a AMD Turion Neo X2 laptop. Now I have a Ryzen 1600 and a NAS Server running an Opteron. My brothers and Dad have also had some AMD CPUs as have friends and I haven’t seen one fail or be unreliable due to AMD.

I am very much looking forward to these new CPUs and hope Dell puts them in their Latitude line, as I will likely then upgrade from my current one with its aging i5 2520m.

    2. When your AMD based computer died, was it actually the AMD CPU that failed or are you just putting the blame on AMD since they had a chip in the computer that failed?

  2. AMD said yesterday when they reported Q3 that HP, Lenovo and Acer will have some notebooks in the next few weeks with a lot more in Q1.
BTW there are more recent Geekbench results for 2700U
