There are a growing number of smartphones with IP68 ratings for dust and water resistance. .
But smartphone maker Nomu wants to do one better. The company claims its Nomu S10 Pro will be the first phone with an IP69 rating. Not that it probably matters all that much to most users.
For the most part, IP68 means that a phone is totally protected against dust and it can withstand complete submersion in at least 1 meter of water for a set period of time, although the depth and time can vary from device to device.
The Samsung Galaxy Note 8, for example, has an IP68 rating and Samsung claims it can be submerged in 1.5 meters (5 feet) of water for up to a half hour without sustaining any damage. You probably won’t want to take it swimming, but it should survive a drop in the pool (or more likely, the toilet).
Nomu says its S10 Pro can handle depths of 2 meters (6.6 feet) for up to 60 minutes. But here’s the thing: technically an IP68 rated phone could probably do the same thing.
So what does IP69 actually mean? I have no idea. Officially, there’s no such thing.
There is an IP69K rating though. But it has nothing to do with submersion depth or length. A rating of IP69K means that a phone can withstand close-range, high-pressure, high-temperature sprays of water.
All in all, this might explain something a bit funny about the Nomu S10 Pro: while Nomu released a video describing it as an IP69 phone, if you actually follow the link to the Nomu Store posted in the YouTube video description, you’ll see that the phone is described as having IP68 water resistance on the store page.
It does seem to have a rugged case, as well as decent specs for a $160 phone, including a 5,000 mAh battery, 3GB of RAM, a MediaTek MTK6737T quad-core processor, and a 5 inch HD display.
But its water resistance isn’t really anything special.

If you ask me what i value most about a rugged phone, the signal of course. Whenever i need to go to some suburb or remote places, the weak or no signal of phone makes me crazy. What if something unexpected happened? I just can’t connect with anyone. So i am quite satisfied with this S50pro which gets strong signal.
There is a time i find fast charge is really important. Because of the delay of the airplane, my phone runs out of battery and i find a place to charge in the waiting hall. after 1 hours the electricity is enough for me to go through the whole flying time and contact the receiver of hotel. I just can’t imagine what will happen if my phone didn’t work. I am glad to see that the S50pro has big battery and fast charge.
It is very important to keep safe when traveling in the wild. Good signal can ensure normal communication with the outside world, so it seems this phone is doing quite well.
My friends usually ask me why i still use rugged phone, it’s a age that APPLE phone gets the most attention. For me, it’s not necessary to buy such a expensive phone and it may bother me a lot to worry about it may be stolen or destroyed by accident. i choose what i need. The nomu rugged phone is good enough to meet all my demands.
Although i have a trendy phone, I’d like to buy this rugged phone for a backup. Whenever i want travel or do outdoor activities, it’s more safe and convenient to carry it.
I always worries about the phone dropping power suddenly in winter. Quite danger i feel. So when i see this S50pro can work normal in cold environment, i am impressed a lot and prepare to buy.
I have heard many trendy phone have the function of waterproof, but it may not what i mean for that. they can only work when only few water splashed on the phone, and when they are completely flooded, the device will be useless. I guess that why these trendy phone brands usually didn’t boast their waterproof function. On the contrary, this nomu rugged phone are trying to make their phone more tougher. It seems they have a big ambition to attract more people to use their phone.
I have been working in the workshop all year round. The environment is very hot and stuffy. Phone can sometimes get stuck, If this phone really has such high temperature resistance, it should be very durable.
I always go fishing if i have free time, i will put this rugged phone on my buying list. You know, there is a high possibility the phone have some accidents by the river.

I thought IP69 meant you held one phone upside-down against another phone and they, er, share an Internet connection over audio.
Now that I think about it, jokes aside, that would be a great cross-platform NFC-style communications protocol for phones, taking advantage of the already present mics and speakers.
