As expected, Huawei’s next flagship phone will be powered by the Kirin 970 processor the company unveiled this week at the IFA show in Berlin. The new phone is called the Huawei Mate 10 and it’ll get an official launch on October 16th.

There’s also a higher-priced model called the Mate 10 Pro that will be unveiled at the same time.

We’ll learn more about things like the screen, storage, software, and cameras for the phones in October. But now that the Kirin 970 processor is official, it seems likely that the Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro will take advantage of the chip’s new Neural Processing Unit (NPU) for speedy image recognition and other artificial intelligence-related tasks.

Among other things, this enables support for scene and object recognition in the camera app, allowing you to snap a group of pictures and select the best shots.

The Kirin 970 is a 10nm processor that features an octa-core CPU (4 ARM Cortex A73 CPU cores and four Cortex-A53 cores), 12-core ARM Mali-G72 graphics, a dual ISP system for cameras featuring support for hybrid autofocus, low-light image capture, and motion photography, and LTE Cat 18 support for download speeds up to 1.2 Gbps.

  1. Let me guess, it will have a curved screen with a weird 19:9 aspect ratio.

    I hope the new iPhone follows the trend with an All-Front/Slim Bezel display… but I hope Apple does it WITH a 16:9 aspect ratio.
    Why?
    It would mean they actually decrease the phone’s external dimensions, and kept full-compatibilty with established Apps, unlike all the competitors. That would actually be revolutionary. Thus causing competitors to go back and actually improve their devices rather than gimmick designs.

    I have both LG G6 and Nexus 5X and theyre the same physical size. In terms of screen size, the Nexus 5X holds the same amount of content for MOST use cases (eg G6 fits more content in the Settings screen). However, the Nexus 5X gives me TWO speakers and both are front-firing. The LG G6 only gives me one small, bottom facing monospeaker (also hate the location of aux port, and smaller fingerprint scanner). So design wise, the LG G6 was a downgrade. If you had the Nexus 5X, and trimmed the bezels, that would be a practical improvement to the user. You can’t go compromise the speakers for the screen, or vice versa, everything must be meaningful compromises on a mobile experience.

    1. 2:1 aspect ratio isn’t a gimmick, it’s actually quite useful for providing a larger display without making the device too wide to hold.

      Do keep in mind, there is a physical limit to how narrow a device can be. The iPhone 8 is said to have a 5.8 inch display. A 5.8 inch display with a 16:9 aspect ratio has to be at least 72 mm wide, and there will always be a bezel of ~5 mm* on the display. This would make the phone 77 mm wide, making it 0.9 mm less than the iPhone 7 Plus, so still really big. Point being, Apple is going to use a ~2:1 ratio with 16:9 content sitting in a space of around 5.15 inches and menus/notifications/task bars taking up the leftover space.

      *The Sharp Aquos Crystal, which has essentially no bezels, has a 5 inch 16:9 display (width of 62 mm) and the phone is 67 mm wide. Therefore ~5 mm is added.

      1. This is a glass half empty/full scenario.
        You say the 2:1 aspect ratio isn’t a gimmick, because your reasoning is that if the device wasn’t long, that extra length would have unnecessary bezel.

        Sure, I admit, having the extra length cover the bezel is an improvement.

        However, its NOT making the device smaller. In fact, it could actually make it larger.
        That is my argument.
        Instead of MASKING the bezels, they should ACTUALLY eliminate them. Again, the comparison between the Nexus 5X and the LG G6. They have roughly the same width and length. When watching a video, the picture size is roughly the same.
        However, the LG G6 has a weaker, monospeaker, that fires downwards/away from the user.
        The Nexus 5X has a more powerful, stereospeaker, that fires front/towards the user.

        From a PRACTICAL standpoint, the Nexus 5X is superior… despite its huge bezels.
        If you could shave 60% of the bezels, from 16mm each side, to only 6mm each side….
        ….yeah, that would be USEFUL and innovative, unlike current trend.

        Yes, you need at least 2mm’s each side for the bezel/phone material, so the width would be 4mm’s larger. Even 6mm total is great.

        So let’s consider a hypothetical new Nexus 5X:
        Screen = 16:9 5.2in = 115.1 x 64.8mm
        Phone dimensions = (115.1 + 6 + 6) x (64.8 + 2 + 2)
        Phone dimensions = 127 x 69mm
        Phone Screen to Body Ratio = (115.1 x 64.8)/(127×69)
        Phone Screen to Body Ratio = 85.1%

        Compared to LG G6:
        Screen = 18:9 5.7in = 129.5 x 64.7mm
        Phone dimensions = (129.5 + 10 + 9.4) x (64.7 + 3.6 + 3.6)
        Phone dimensions = 148.9 x 71.9
        Phone Screen to Body Ratio = (129.5 x 64.7)/(148.9 x 71.9)
        Phone Screen to Body Ratio = 78.3%

        …see where I’m getting at ?
        You don’t need weird aspect ratios to increase S-t-B ratio.
        In fact, that’s counterproductive.
        Just use the standard display size, slap two speakers on the front, put the front camera there too, and forget about “rounding the LCD’s corners”… stop MASKING the bezels, and actually engineer the krabapple out of it to REMOVE the excess bezels.

        PS While I think Samsung’s curved sides and curved corners look glossy nice, and feel kind of cool… I find the reflected light very distracting, the curved image a detractor, and the actual exponential increase of fragility/decreased sturdy to be an appalling trade-off. Flat front, flat sides is the practical way to go. It even makes it easier to apply glass screen protectors and slim cases.
