Sony is holding a press event on August 31st, when the company is expected to launch its latest smartphones. Rumor (and leak) has it that we can expect a Sony Xperia XZ1 smartphone with premium specs an Xperia XZ1 Compact with similar specs, but a smaller display.

Now we have an idea of what those new phones will look like.

@rquandt

Roland Quandt has published pricing details and some pictures of the XZ1 and XZ1 Compact, with the smaller phone expected to sell for 499 GBP ($640) and the larger model going for 599 GBP ($770).

The design of the phones isn’t a dramatic departure from earlier models: the top and bottom bezels are still pretty large (by 2017 standards). And despite earlier indications that the fingerprint sensor might have been moved to the back of the phone, it looks like Sony is keeping the combined fingerprint/power button on the side of the phone.

Sony’s new phones are expected to feature Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processors, 4GB of RAM, and 1920 x 1080 pixel displays. The Xperia XZ1 should have a 5.2 inch display, while the Compact model will likely have a 4.6 inch screen… if earlier leaks are accurate (which they might not be).

Sony may also be working on a 5 inch Xperia X1 smartphone with mid-range specs including Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 processor.

  1. If SONY could shave 60% off the bezel from the top, and 60% off from the bottom bezel this would be awesome. It would be: best aspect ratio, small form-factor, dual speakers.
    That’s the golden aim!

    PS: an OLED screen with Always On mode would be neat too, if nothing for the deep Blacks.

  2. I can’t believe we live in a world where 4.6 inch is considered compact.. i’d love it if LG would make a successor to the LG F3.. I love that little phone and still use it as my internet connected MP3 player. I love the small profile on it.. my only complaint is that it isn’t as fast as it used to be

    1. With the 5.2 inch XZ fitting into my right front jeans pocket – together with my wallet, I see no problem calling that and anything smaller “compact”.

      I don’t know what you’d like for compact, a postage stamp?
      With the display of a Nokia phone from the 90’s?

      Tedious…

      1. I liked the Xperia active (3.5″) and X10 mini (2.6″, if memory serves), but at least the latter is almost smartwatch territory. Still, 3.5″ was a nice size and what with less bezel, you could probably fit a 4.2″ in the same housing these day

    2. would like to give you +100, but, alas, only one click is allowed, and I’m too lazy to hack it.
