As expected, Motorola is continuing to flesh out its 2017 smartphone lineup with two new Moto E devices.

The Moto E4 features a 5 inch HD display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 processor, and a $130 price tag, while the Moto E4 Plus is a $180 model with a bigger screen, a bigger battery, and a Snapdragon 427 chip.

Motorola says there will also be an Amazon Prime Exclusive version of the Moto E4 in the future, which means you’ll probably be able to pick one up for as little as $80 (if you don’t mind buying a phone with ads in the user interface and a bunch of Amazon apps pre-loaded).

The smaller, cheaper model continues Motorola’s trend of offering solid specs on its budget smartphones. Features include 2GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, an 8MP rear camera with autofocus and an LED flash, and a 5MP front camera. Both cameras support burst mode and HDR photos.

The Moto E4 also features a 2,800 mAh battery… and it’s removable. Motorola includes a rapid charger with the phone, and the Moto E4 has a micro USB port and a 3.5mm headset jack.

If you’re wondering where Motorola cut corners to keep the price low, the phone has a 720p display, 802.11ab/g/n WiFi, a single speaker, and no NFC.

Motorola’s 5.5 inch Moto E4 Plus has similar specs, but it’s available with either 16GB or 32GB of storage, features a 13MP rear camera, and comes with a 5,000 mAh battery.

  1. This is good news for me, as I’ve been eyeing the G4 Play since my current phone’s battery is dropping off. It would be nice if higher specced phones had removable batteries too, but I’ve had the chance to use the Moto G3 with the sd410, and it’s pleasant to use. So now I’ve got a few options, at least from Motorola. This explains why there was no G5 Play model.

Good. I’m glad some manufacturers are still offering devices with removable batteries. I don’t give a flip about having a razor thin phone. I’d much rather have a slightly chunky one with a removable battery.
No mention of an SD card, but Moto has been good about having them, so I would expect there to be one on the new models. 16GB really isn’t enough without an SD card.
Overall, the specs look good to me for the price. I’m fine with 720p and no nfc. Mono speaker is fine as long as it’s decent quality. I’ll just have to wait and see if they offer this with my carrier and if there’s a good case available.

  3. Any info on whether the E line will have “universal” compatibility with US Big 4 carriers, as with the G line?
