Earlier this month the mid-range Moto Z2 Play aws announced. It’s a substantial upgrade over last year’s model, and it’s not the only refresh on the Moto radar. The Z2 is also on the way and it’s just made another early appearance thanks to GFXBench.

Based on the data that Winfuture.de posted [Google translate link], the Moto Z2 will ship with an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 835. That’s the same chip that powers the Galaxy S8, and both the new GFXBench and previously-posted Geekbench results indicate that the Z2 should offer a similarly high-performance experience. Unconfirmed benchmarks should be taken with a grain of salt, what with all the numbers we’ve seen inflated by OEM trickery in the past.

The Z2 will also pack 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage (with around 47GB left for you to use as you see fit). By the look of things, the Z2 will feature the same 12MP rear-facing and 5MP front-facing cameras as the Z2 Play. Images, video, and games will look great on the Z2, thanks to its Adreno 520 GPU and a 5.5-inch 2560 x 1440 display.

Given that both benchmarks that have appeared showed the phone running Android 7.1.1, it seems likely that Z2 owners will have to wait for an OTA update to get their hands on April’s 7.1.2 update. All in all, the Z2 looks like a solid flagship device from Moto.

Speaking of looks… Android Authority has them partly covered. That’s a front-on view they got their hands on you see at the top of the post.

  1. Hopefully the keyboard mod will ship next month and this will go from a ho-hum phone to the coolest piece of kit on the market.

  2. Will these still use the same snap-ons as the current Moto Z line? I’ve had my eye on that gamepad accessory.

    1. Yes, same Motomod compatibility. However, wait for official battery capacity details, early reports are saying the Z2 and Z2 Play have drastically smaller batteries than the original models.

      1. There are already reviews of the Z2 Play out.
The Z2 Play has a battery around 3000 mAh, the Z Play
        has a 3510 mAh battery. The Z had a 2800 mAh battery.
Tech web sites seem to have joined the fake news bandwagon
as they don’t include full specifications. Even Motorola’s
site doesn’t tell you if a device has a microSD card slot,
or up to what capacity microSD card a device can handle.
The Z Play and Z2 Play can take up to a 2 TB microSDXC.

      2. Thanks. I’ll be watching out for those reviews – the battery life on my Motorola Turbo 2 is the best of any Android phone I’ve ever owned – and even better than most tablets I’ve used.

        1. Another thing I’m looking for in specs is 802.11ac support. The last Motorola Z and Z Play lacked 802.11ac, and so far there is no indication of this generation supporting it.

          1. It would be shocking if it didn’t have “AC” support given that the Moto G5 Plus does.

BTW, as to Chris’ comment about battery life, my G5 Plus is also incredible. It’s the first smartphone where I don’t make a habit of plugging it in every night. These higher end probably won’t be as thrifty though.
